PROVIDENCE, R.I. (The American/SMU) – American Athletic Conference Commissioner Mike Aresco today announced the conference's All-Academic team, which recognizes student-athletes with at least a 3.0 GPA. A total of 217 SMU student-athletes were recognized, a figure which represents over 50 percent of all student-athletes at SMU, and has increased from 202 following the 2015-16 season.
Nominations for the All-Academic Team are submitted by each of the American Athletic Conference's member institutions. To be eligible for the honor, a nominee must have competed in an American Athletic Conference-sponsored sport, attained a minimum grade-point-average of 3.00 for the preceding academic year, and completed a minimum of two consecutive semesters or three consecutive quarters of academic work, with a total of 18 semester or 27 quarter credits, not including remedial courses.
To date, the Mustangs have had 39 student-athletes earn academic All-America honors this season in their respective sports, and also had forty student-athletes earn
University Honors for the spring semester
SMU's total does not include equestrian student-athletes, as it is not a sport sponsored by the American Athletic Conference.
