Ojeleye, Wilfong Named to NABC Honors Court

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (SMU/NABC) – Semi Ojeleye and Jonathan Wilfong were named to the 2016-17 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court on Monday. The Honors Court recognizes men's collegiate basketball student-athletes who excelled in academics during the past season.

Ojeleye was the 2016-17 American Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Year, averaging 19.0 points (3rd AAC) and 6.9 rebounds (11th AAC) while shooting 48.7 percent overall (8th AAC) and 42.4 percent from 3-point range (3rd AAC). Ojeleye was also named AP All-America Honorable Mention, All-AAC First Team, NABC All-District 25 First Team and USBWA All-District VII after helping the Mustangs to The American regular season title with a 17-1 league record. He was then named the AAC All-Tournament Most Outstanding Player after the Mustangs won the AAC Tournament title en route to the NCAA Tournament. SMU finished the season 30-5 overall and No. 11 in the final AP Top 25. Ojeleye was then selected 37th overall by the Boston Celtics in the 2017 NBA Draft.

Ojeleye also volunteered at City Square, an organization that is dedicated to fighting poverty in the Dallas community. Academically, he was named The American 2016-17 Scholar-Athlete of the Year, garnered CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team honors and earned the 2016-17 American Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award. He graduated from SMU in May with a bachelor's degree in psychology.

In four seasons at SMU, Wilfong played in 53 games, including two starts. He helped the Mustangs win the American Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament titles and earn an NCAA Tournament berth in 2014-15 and 2016-17. He graduated from SMU in May with a bachelor's degree in finance.

The Memphis, Tenn., native, was a 2016-17 NABC Allstate Good Works Nominee for his work with Coaching For Literacy. He is a co-founder of Coaching for Literacy (coachingforliteracy.org), an organization that helps fund literacy programs focused on helping elementary and middle school students. The mission of Coaching for Literacy is to increase awareness about the number of people in America who are functionally or totally illiterate and the social problems associated with illiteracy. By partnering with sports teams from across the country for a unique game-day experience, Coaching for Literacy raises money to supports effective local literacy programs and schools focused on educating elementary and middle school students.

The 2016-17 Mustangs finished No. 11 in the Associated Press poll after winning the American Athletic Conference season and tournament championships en route to the NCAA Tournament. It was the second championship sweep for SMU in the past three seasons. The Mustangs won a program-record 30 games (30-5) that included going 17-1 in conference play and 18-0 in Moody Coliseum. SMU had two of the longest winning streaks in program history at 16 games (third) and 10 games (tied fourth) in a stretch that saw 26 victories in 27 outings.
