DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU volleyball team swept Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (25-15, 27-25, 25-21) in the final match of the SMU DoubleTree Invitational in Moody Coliseum Saturday afternoon.
Lauren Mills scored 12 kills with nine digs, earning all-tournament honors.
Katie Hegarty led all scorers with 14 kills, while
Brittany Adams scored 13.
Meryn Kennedy made it four Mustangs in double figures with 11 kills.
Kendall Patterson picked up her first double-double of the year with 46 assists and 10 digs.
SMU (1-2) completed the sweep with a 25-21 victory in the third set. The Mustangs scored four of the first five points, and stretched the lead to five, 10-5, with a block by Mills. The Islanders (1-2) cut the lead to one, 15-14, but SMU never let them tie the score. Transfer

With a 10-8 lead in the first set, SMU scored four of the next five points with three kills and an ace, to take a 14-9 lead. The Mustangs extended the lead to 10 when Mills served an ace on SMU's first attempt at set point, giving SMU a 1-0 lead with the 25-15 win. Kennedy led the attack with five kills, while Mills and Adams added four each. As a team, SMU scored 19 kills with a .366 attack percentage, while holding the Islanders to a .089 attack percentage with seven kills.
A&M-Corpus Christi threatened to even the match in the second set, taking a 12-6 lead early in the set. The advantage was still five for the Islanders, 18-13, before the Mustangs began chipping away at the lead. A kill by Adams and a block by Mills and Brunstein cut the lead to three. After a TAMU-CC kill, two more SMU kills forced a timeout by the Islanders with the lead just two, 19-17. Out of the timeout, DiBona served an ace and then an attack error allowed SMU to tie the score, 19-19. The Islanders had the first attempt to win the set, leading 24-23, but SMU got back-to-back kills by Hegarty and Adams. After another kill by TAMU-CC, Adams and Mills combined for back-to-back kills to give SMU a 27-25 win for the 2-0 lead in the match.
The Mustangs play Ole Miss Friday at 4 p.m. to start the Arkansas State tournament. SMU will also play Arkansas State and Virginia Tech in Jonesboro, Ark.
