Final Results
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (SMU) - Junior Brigitte Dunne saved her best for the final round of the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate, firing five birdies on her way to a 4-under 67 to jump 10 spots on the final day of play to finish tied for fifth on the individual leaderboard. Her round was the best by a Mustang in the tournament and the second-best round of the day by any golfer. As a team, SMU came in at ninth at 22-over 874.
"We had two good rounds," head coach Jeanne Sutherland said. "We have a lot of young players, so we will get better at having strong mindsets each time we play. The second round dropped us down the leaderboard, but I still think we had a good start and saw good play from a young team."
After leading SMU in birdies last season, Dunne's 12 birdies over the three rounds led the Mustangs and finished tied for sixth-most in the tournament.Â
"My goal was to let it come to me and not to press," Dunne said. "I did a good job of it, and it was a chill and fun day."
Sophomore Faith Summers was solid again for SMU, finishing in the top-25 individually with her 3-over 74 in round three. Summers, along with Ana Paula Ramirez, finished with nine birdies.Â
Both Lauren Chappell and Kennedy Pedigo were competing in the first tournament of their SMU careers. Pedigo rebounded on Tuesday after a second round 82, posting SMU's second-best score of the day (71). Chappell, competing as an individual, was consistent across all three rounds (75-75-74). Â
SMU held steady at ninth, ending the round in the same position it started it this morning. The Mustangs found success especially on par fives. SMU shot 17-under on those holes over the two days, trailing only tournament runner-up Kent State.Â
Illinois edged out Kent State by a single stroke for the team title with a 12-under 840. Wake Forest's Emilia Migliaccio finished 9-under to claim the individual title.
The Mustangs return to the course on Monday, September 25, at the Golfweek Conference Challenge in Wolcott, Colorado.Â
