DALLAS (SMU) – SMU rallied past UCF for a 2-1 victory in its American Athletic Conference home opener Friday night at Westcott Field.
With the score tied at 1-1, Dwight Williams Jr. punched in his first goal of the season in the 75th minute off a perfect cross from the far wing from
Jared Rice. It was his second career goal and Rice's fourth assist of the season.
The Mustangs remain undefeated at home with a 6-0-0 record giving the Knights their fourth straight road loss. SMU improves to 7-2-0 overall and 1-1-0 in The American, while UCF falls to 1-5-1 and 0-2-0 in conference play.
UCF jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute when Matias Pyysalo found the back of the net inside the box. However, SMU responded with the equalizer in the 21st minute when
Garrett McLaughlin knocked in his own rebound from the far post after his initial shot was saved by UCF. It was McLaughlin's sixth goal of the season and his 10th career goal.
Six Mustangs recorded shots with McLaughlin and
Bryce Clark each with two. SMU had a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. Goalkeeper
Michael Nelson played the entire 90 minutes and registered three saves to give him 24 on the season.
SMU continues conference play at Temple Saturday, Oct. 7. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. CT.
