Shake Milton was named The American Co-Player of the Week. Milton averaged 26.5 points, 5.0 assists and 4.0 rebounds in wins at then-No. 7/4 Wichita State and against Tulane to earn his third POTW Award this season. He is on the Naismith Trophy, Wooden Award, Lute Olson and Bob Cousy watch lists, recorded 33- and 20-point performances, while shooting 53.3 percent from the field (16-30) and 7-11 from three. In the 83-78 win at Wichita State, Milton scored a career-high 33 points on 11-14 shooting, including 5-6 from three-point range, while playing all 40 minutes. In the second half, he scored 21 points (7-8 FG, 3-3 3FG, 4-4 FT). He also had five assists with three rebounds. Milton led SMU past Tulane, 73-62, with his eighth 20-point performance of the season. Â
LAST GAME (L, 63-52 at Connecticut on Jan. 25): SMUMustangs.com: STORRS, Conn. (SMU) - In a defensive battle on the road in conference play, SMU couldn't find enough offense to pull off the win, falling to UConn 63-52. Junior
Shake Milton led SMU in the scoring column, dropping in 18 points while also grabbing seven rebounds. Milton has reached at least 15 points in each of the last four games and in five of the last six contests. Sophomore
Jimmy Whitt had the most efficient offensive night for the Mustangs, scoring 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting. SMU started hot, hitting three of its first six shots to jump out to an 8-0 lead. From there however, buckets became much more difficult to come by. The Mustangs finished the game shooting just 28 percent from the floor while scoring a season-low 52 points. Shots from the floor wouldn't fall, but SMU did help itself by putting together its best free-throw shooting performance of the season. The Mustangs hit 13-of-15 free ones to finish at a season-high 87 percent. While SMU only had one more turnover than the Huskies, turnovers turned out to be the difference in the game. The Mustangs' 10 turnovers turned into 21 of UConn's points, while SMU only generated five points from the nine turnovers by the Huskies. The team rebounding numbers finished even, but it was a tale of two halves. SMU dominated the boards in the first half. The Mustangs finished the first 20 minutes with nearly as many offensive rebounds (10) as UConn had total rebounds (13). However, in the second half, the Huskies were able to outrebound the SMU by 10 to even up the battle on the glass. Senior
Ben Emelogu II led the Mustangs in the rebounding category by tying a career-high with 10 rebounds.
Â
ALL-TIME GREAT GENE PHILLIPS TO BE HONORED JAN. 28: SMU will honor the jersey of all-time great Gene Phillips at Moody Coliseum during a halftime ceremony. Phillips wore number 23 during his basketball career from 1968-71. Phillips was a three-time Southwest Conference Player of the Year and SWC first-team honoree. The 2011 SMU Athletics Hall of Fame inductee averaged 26.1 points and 7.5 rebounds per game during his three-season career on the Hilltop. He set the program record with 1,932 career points, which is still second. His 26.1 points per game for a career are also the SMU standard. He also holds the marks for the top two seasons at SMU in scoring and scoring average; totaling 737 points with a 28.3 average in 1970-71 and adding 685 points for a 28.5 average in 1969-70. He set the SMU and SWC record with 51 points at Texas on March 2, 1971, and scored 30 or more points 24 times. Semi Ojeleye scored a career-high 36 points and No. 12 SMU held off East Carolina 81-77 in the quarterfinals of the American Athletic Conference Tournament. The conference's player of the year hit 12 of his 19 shots and pulled down 12 rebounds, giving him his fifth double-double this season.
Sterling Brown added 16 points for SMU. The AAC's regular-season champions have won 14 straight and 24 of their last 25 games. Kentrell Barkley, who has been battling tendinitis in his left knee, had 22 of his 24 points in the second half to lead East Carolina, which rallied from a 22-point halftime deficit to tie the game. Caleb White had 17 points and Elijah Hughes added 15 for the Pirates. Ojeleye had 17 points and nine rebounds in the first half, when the Mustangs led by as many as 24 points. A 3-pointer by White, followed by a steal and layup from Elijah Hughes on the inbounds, cut it to 71-69 with just over 3 minutes left.
