WHITT EARNS SECOND AAC WEEKLY HONOR (JAN. 29): Jimmy Whitt posted a career-high 20 points in SMU's victory over ECU, going 9-of-11 from the field. On the week, Whitt went 14-of-20 from the floor, averaging 17.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists for the Mustangs.

LAST GAME (W, 96-61 vs East Carolina on Jan. 28): SMUMustangs.com: DALLAS (SMU) - SMU's offense was firing on all cylinders on Sunday afternoon in Moody Coliseum as the Mustangs cruised past ECU, 86-61, to get back above .500 in conference play. All five starters for the Mustangs reached double-digits in the scoring column as SMU shot 62 percent from the floor as a team. Of the 86 points scored by the Mustangs, 80 of them were provided by the starters. Sophomore Jimmy Whitt and junior Jahmal McMurray each provided 20 points on combined 17-of-23 shooting to lead the Mustangs. The total set a career-high for Whitt, while McMurray's 20 was a season-high. On top of his deadeye 9-of-11 shooting performance, Whitt also dished out six assists to lead the Mustangs in that category as well on his huge offensive night. Each starter shot at least 50 percent from the floor, and the five combined to shoot better than 60 percent from 3-point range (11-of-18). McMurray knocked down four of his five shots from range, while Ben Emelogu II and Ethan Chargois both hit three. ECU used hot shooting in the first half to keep the game relatively close with SMU going into the half with an 11-point lead. An 11-3 Mustang run to open the second half, coupled with the Pirates shooting just 15 percent from beyond-the-arc over the final 20 minutes, led to SMU blowing the game open and coasting to the win down the stretch.

THE SERIES VS. TULSA (19-31): SMU is facing Tulsa for the 51st time, with Tulsa holding a 31-19 lead in the series. The Mustangs have won five of the last six meetings against the Golden Hurricane after sweeping the 2016-17 season series. SMU opened with a 76-53 victory in Tulsa on Feb. 4, before a 93-70 win on March 2, 2017 at Moody Coliseum. In 2015-16, the teams split two games with SMU winning the first, 81-69 at Tulsa on Dec. 29, 2015, before falling 82-77 in Moody Coliseum on Feb. 10, 2016. In 2014-15, the teams met in the 2014-15 regular season finale when the Mustangs clinched the American Athletic Conference Championship with a 67-62 win over the Golden Hurricane in Moody Coliseum on March 8, 2015. The teams were members of the WAC from 1996 to 2005 and then Conference USA from 2005 through 2013. The series between the two schools dates back to 1919-20.

LAST SEASON VS. TULSA (W, 93-70 at Moody Coliseum on March 2, 2017): DALLAS (AP) -- Semi Ojeleye was perfect from the field, and yet SMU's big man was more impressed with Shake Milton's play from a sitting position that set up one of the Mustangs' highlight alley-oops while they clinched at least a share of the American Athletic Conference title. Milton maintained control of the ball after tripping just past midcourt, even dribbling between his legs while sitting on the court. Still on his rear end with defenders around him, Milton then passed to Sterling Brown, who delivered the alley-oop to Ojeleye in the Mustangs' 93-70 victory over Tulsa. Milton said his spectacular dribbling just happened in the heat of the moment. Ojeleye made all nine of his field goal attempts, including a couple of highlight dunks and three 3-pointers, and all five starters scored in double figures for the Mustangs (26-4, 16-1). Jarrey Foster added 18 points on 9-of-11 shooting with a couple of slams of his own, while Brown had 19 points and Ben Moore had 12. The Mustangs have a 12-game winning streak and a one-game lead in the AAC standings over No. 18 Cincinnati, which won its home finale 65-47 over Houston earlier Thursday night. They can take the league title outright with a win at home Saturday over Memphis. Corey Henderson had 17 points for Tulsa and Junior Etou had 13. After building a 19-point halftime lead, the Mustangs had a 14-2 run early in the second half that included Milton's consecutive alley-oop passes -- to Ojeleye and Foster -- before the guard hit a 3-pointer from the left corner. That was a few minutes before the under-the-leg dribble. Even when Milton is sitting on the court. (W, 76-53 at Tulsa on Feb. 4, 2017): TULSA, Okla. (AP) -- Sterling Brown scored 24 of his 27 points in the second half and SMU rolled past Tulsa for a 76-53 win. Shake Milton added 19 points, Semi Ojeleye had 16 and Ben Moore collected 10 rebounds for SMU (20-4, 10-1 American), which shot 49 percent from the field to pick up its sixth straight win. Brown was 9 of 15 from the field and his 24 second-half points were the most by a Mustang since 2011. Jarrey Foster's dunk with 6:31 left before intermission made it 20-19 and put SMU on top for good as the Mustangs continued to pull away while holding Tulsa scoreless over the final seven minutes of the first half. Earlier in the opening half, Tulsa (12-10, 6-4) took its only lead of the game during a 12-2 run that made it 19-16. Junior Etou led Tulsa with 18 points and Sterling Taplin had 12.

COACHING FOR LITERACY (CoachingForLiteracy.org): This is the fourth straight season SMU hosted a CFL game (Jan. 28 vs East Carolina). Jonathan Wilfong (SMU '17) and Andrew Renshaw, two then-high school seniors from Memphis, Tennessee, founded Coaching for Literacy in 2012. The premise is that a participant offers a monetary donation and, in exchange, gets to be the "Assistant Coach" during a sporting event. Proceeds raised from the event go towards funding effective literacy programs focused on helping elementary and middle school students. Coaching for Literacy partners with collegiate and professional sports teams for a unique game-day experience. --- The mission of Coaching for Literacy is to increase awareness about the number of people in America who are functionally or totally illiterate and the social problems associated with illiteracy. By leveraging the unique power of collegiate and professional sports, Coaching for Literacy raises money to supports effective local literacy programs and schools focused on educating elementary and middle school students. SMU hosted two CFL events in 2014-15, two in 2015-16 and one in 2016-17. In 2016-17, the SMU staff wore neon green ties during a three-game stretch as part of the awareness effort from the home win against Stanford on Dec. 19 through the win a Memphis, WIlfong's home town, on Dec. 27.

ALL-TIME GREAT GENE PHILLIPS HONORED ON JAN. 28: SMU honored the jersey of all-time great Gene Phillips at Moody Coliseum during a halftime ceremony. Phillips wore number 23 during his basketball career from 1968-71. Phillips was a three-time Southwest Conference Player of the Year and SWC first-team honoree. The 2011 SMU Athletics Hall of Fame inductee averaged 26.1 points and 7.5 rebounds per game during his three-season career on the Hilltop. He set the program record with 1,932 career points, which is still second. His 26.1 points per game for a career are also the SMU standard. He also holds the marks for the top two seasons at SMU in scoring and scoring average; totaling 737 points with a 28.3 average in 1970-71 and adding 685 points for a 28.5 average in 1969-70. He set the SMU and SWC record with 51 points at Texas on March 2, 1971, and scored 30 or more points 24 times. He was selected by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 1971 NBA Draft and played two seasons with the ABA's Dallas Chaparrals.

NABC SUITS & SNEAKERS (JAN. 22-28): The SMU coaching staff participated in the annual NABC Suits & Sneakers event for both games this week. The Coaches vs. Cancer program is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. This initiative leverages the personal experiences, community leadership, and professional excellence of coaches nationwide to increase cancer awareness and promote healthy living through year-round awareness efforts, fundraising activities, and advocacy programs. Since 1993, coaches have raised over $100 million for the American Cancer Society.
