LAST GAME (L, 73-70 at Tulane on Jan. 4): SMUMustangs.com: NEW ORLEANS (SMU) - In their first conference game of the season away from Moody Coliseum, the Mustangs were unable to slow down a hot-shooting Green Wave squad in the second half, falling 73-70. Junior
Shake Milton continued his stellar play, scoring a game-high 24 points while also contributing six rebounds. Milton shot 64 percent and was a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the arc. Fellow junior
Jarrey Foster also logged a strong game, dropping 16 points on 50 percent shooting while grabbing a team-high seven rebounds. SMU led by as many as 12 in the second half, but Tulane caught fire offensively to erase that deficit, especially from 3-point range. The Green Wave shot 59 percent from the floor in the final 20 minutes, including hitting 6-of-12 from behind the arc. That came after hitting just one 3-pointer in the first half. Free throws also played a big role in Tulane's comeback win against the Mustangs. The Green Wave finished a nearly flawless 18-of-20 from the charity stripe. In the closing moments, Tulane hit 5-of-6 free throws to keep SMU from ever having a real opportunity with the ball down just one possession. The one miss of the second half came with just .3 seconds remaining, and SMU's desperation heave was off the mark. The loss snapped an 18-game winning streak against American Athletic Conference opponents for the Mustangs. It also snapped a six-game winning streak on the road in conference games. It was just the second time this season SMU allowed 70 points or more. Due to an illness, standout freshman
Ethan Chargois did not play on Thursday night.Â

UP NEXT: SMU hosts Temple on Wednesday at 8 p.m. before a road test at [9/9] Wichita State on January 17.

THE SERIES VS. CINCINNATI (5-7+): SMU and Cincinnati will square off for the 13th time. SMU won 2-of-3 meetings during the 2016-17 season, including a 71-56 win on March 12, 2017 to win the American Athletic Conference Tournament and earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. Earlier in the season, the Bearcats won the season opener, 66-64, on Jan. 12 at Fifth Third Arena, before SMU took the rematch 60-51 on Feb. 12 at Moody Coliseum. Since becoming conference foes, Cincinnati holds a 5-3 record over the Mustangs. Prior to the AAC, the series had been dormant since 1974-75. SMU won the only previous neutral site encounter in 1966, an NCAA Midwest Regional contest in Lubbock, Texas. (+4-7 officially)
Â
THIS SEASON VS. CINCINNATI (W, 71-56 at AAC Championship on March 12): HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Nobody will be heading into the NCAA Tournament with more momentum than SMU. The Mustangs won their 16th straight game, taking the American Athletic Conference championship with a 71-56 victory over Cincinnati.
Sterling Brown led the Mustangs with 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Tournament MVP
Semi Ojeleye added 14 points,
Jarrey Foster had 13 and
Ben Moore scored 12. It was the second AAC title in three years for SMU. The Mustangs took the championship in 2015, but missed last year's postseason under NCAA sanctions. Jarron Cumberland had 14 points to lead Cincinnati, which has not won a conference title since capturing the Conference USA crown in 2004. SMU started the year 4-3, but has reeled off 26 wins in 27 games. They went 17-1 to win the league's regular-season title, with the only loss coming by two points at Cincinnati in January. The Mustangs never trailed in this one. They shot 50 percent from the field and made 10 of their 19 shots from 3-point range. Brown scored six points to spark SMU on a game-opening 11-2 run. A 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer by
Ben Emelogu II from just inside the midcourt logo gave the Mustangs a 32-23 lead. It was the lowest scoring first half of the season for the Bearcats. Cincinnati made just one of its first 15 shots from the field, shot 34 percent for the game and missed 20 of 24 shots from behind the arc. SMU hit four of its first five 3-point attempts in the second half to extend a nine-point lead to 17 at 48-31. (W, 60-51 at SMU Feb. 12): DALLAS (AP) --
Ben Emelogu II acknowledged that SMU players would have been lying if they said Cincinnati wasn't on their minds. The 25th-ranked Mustangs got a bit of a revenge, and in the process took a slight lead in the American Athletic Conference standings. Emelogu hit two 3-pointers and made the tiebreaking free throw in the game-deciding 15-0 run for the Mustangs in a 60-51 win to snap a 15-game winning streak by No. 11 Cincinnati, which had also been responsible for the only loss by SMU in its previous 18 games. Finishing their first week as a ranked team this season, the Mustangs had their big spurt right after Cincinnati had scored 12 in a row in a 2 1/2-minue span soon after halftime to regain the lead. The Bearcats made only three of their last 21 shots after that -- and went without a field goal the final 4:11 of the game. After SMU had finished the first half with eight straight points to tie the game, and went ahead on
Shake Milton's 3-pointer, Kevin Johnson had a tying 3 to start the big spurt by Cincinnati. Johnson also had a steal for a breakaway two-handed slam before Kyle Washington's basket to give the Bearcats their biggest lead of the game at 40-31. But SMU got even on 3s by Emelogu,
Semi Ojeleye and Milton and went ahead to stay on Emeolgu's free throw with 11:47 left before he added another 3. Ojeleye had 18 points to lead SMU while
Sterling Brown had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Milton and Emelogu each had 11 points. Jacob Evans had 15 points for the Bearcats, while Johnson had 13 and Washington 11. Gary Clark had 12 rebounds, but the big man was only 2-of-7 shooting. Cincinnati had 17 field goals overall, 11 being 3-pointers. (L, 66-64 at Cincinnati on Jan 12): CINCINNATI (AP) -- Instead of losing close games this season, Cincinnati is finding ways to pull them out. Troy Caupain scored 16 points and blunted SMU's comeback with a clutch 3-pointer, helping the 22nd-ranked Bearcats hold on for a 66-64 victory over SMU. The Bearcats let most of a 15-point lead slip away, with SMU cutting it to 54-52 on
Jarrey Foster's 3-pointer. Caupain's 3-pointer ended the Mustangs' comeback, and they never got closer than two points the rest of the way.Last season, Cincinnati was known for losing the close ones by giving up baskets or missing shots in the closing seconds. The Bearcats won a matchup of the last two unbeaten teams in American Athletic play, taking their seventh straight game overall. Gary Clark led Cincinnati with 18 points, including two 3s that matched his career high. SMU lost its 10-game winning streak, which tied for third-longest in school history. The Mustangs had two shots in the closing seconds that went off the rim.
Sterling Brown led the Mustangs with a season-high 20 points and 11 rebounds, but he missed a 3-point shot that would have given the Mustangs the lead with 10 seconds left. His shot rolled around the rim and came off to
Ben Moore, who missed a putback attempt to tie it. Kyle Washington had a pull-up jumper and a 3-pointer during a 16-point run that put Cincinnati ahead 27-12. SMU opened the game 4 of 19 from the field with five turnovers.
Semi Ojeleye , who leads the Mustangs at 17.9 points per game, was limited to two free throws in the first half. He finished with 12 points on 4-of-11 shooting. The Mustangs shot 47 percent from the field while making their comeback in the second half.

The Mustangs went 25-5, finishing the season ranked No. 24 after reaching a high of No. 8. In 2014-15, the Mustangs claimed the AAC regular season and tournament championships en route to the NCAA Tournament. SMU was the top seed in the 2014 NIT, reaching the title game. COACHING FOR LITERACY (CoachingForLiteracy.org): This is the fourth straight season SMU will host a CFL game; set for Jan. 28 vs East Carolina.
Jonathan Wilfong (SMU '17) and Andrew Renshaw, two then-high school seniors from Memphis, Tennessee, founded Coaching for Literacy in 2012. Proceeds raised from the event go towards funding effective literacy programs focused on helping elementary and middle school students. Coaching for Literacy partners with collegiate and professional sports teams for a unique game-day experience. --- The mission of Coaching for Literacy is to increase awareness about the number of people in America who are functionally or totally illiterate and the social problems associated with illiteracy. By leveraging the unique power of collegiate and professional sports, Coaching for Literacy raises money to supports effective local literacy programs and schools focused on educating elementary and middle school students.
