NEW ORLEANS (SMU) – The SMU volleyball program lost in five sets at Tulane Friday night (27-29, 26-24, 25-22, 18-25, 15-11).
Brittany Adams led SMU with 16 kills and had 20 digs for her eighth double-double of the season.
Tulane claimed the match with a 15-11 victory in the fifth set. SMU took a 5-2 lead to start the set, but the Green Wave answered with a 6-1 run for an 8-6 lead at the break. SMU could not reclaim the advantage, dropping to 6-10 overall and 3-3 in the American Athletic Conference. With the win, Tulane improved to 14-7, 2-4 in The American.
Adams was one of four Mustangs to score at least 10 kills. Freshman
Hannah Jacobs finished with 15.
Lexi Nordmann scored 11 kills with four blocks, and
Meryn Kennedy added 10 kills with six blocks. SMU hit .213 in the match with 67 kills, but Tulane scored 70 kills with a .208 attack percentage.
Montana Watts recorded 27 digs, and
Kendall Patterson added 15 with a season-high 39 assists.
SMU forced a fifth set with a 25-18 win in the fourth. With a one-point lead, 18-17, the Mustangs allowed Tulane just one more point. SMU scored with five kills and an ace during a 7-1 run to close out the fourth and keep the match going.
Tulane took a 2-1 lead in the match after winning 25-22 in the third set. The home team was in control for most of the set, taking an 11-6 lead early. SMU rallied back, scoring four straight to tie the score, 17-17. Watts capped of the run with an ace from the service line. The Mustangs were unable to capture the lead as Tulane went on to win the set.
Adams scored back-to-back kills at the end of the first set to give SMU a 29-27 win. After holding a large lead for most of the set, SMU found itself trailing late, 26-25, and needing someone to stop the charge by the Green Wave. Tulane scored five straight points to tie the score, 23-23, and took its first lead after SMU scored its 25th point. Kennedy saved the first set-point attempt with a kill, and Jacobs scored to save the second, setting the stage for Adams' late heroics. Led by the senior's six kills, the trio scored 15 of SMU's 21 kills in the set.
With SMU trailing 17-11 in the second,
Kelly Brunstein scored a kill, igniting a 6-0 run for the Mustangs. The senior scored two kills and two blocks during the rally as SMU came back to tie the score, 17-17. The Mustangs made it an 11-3 stretch, taking a 22-20 lead with their fifth block of the set. Tulane answered with back-to-back kills. SMU had the first chance to win the set, serving with a 24-23 lead. This time, however, it was Tulane scoring three straight for the win, 26-24.
The Mustangs play at Memphis Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
