COLLEGE STATION, Texas (SMU) – Six different players recorded singles victories for SMU women's tennis on the opening day of the ITA Regional Championship at the Mitchell Tennis Center, with three Mustangs advancing to the Round of 32.

Three Mustangs earned byes to the Round of 64, and each won their opening match to move on to the Round of 32. Senior Liza Buss defeated Prairie View A&M's Constanza Aranguiz 6-4, 6-2 while junior Sarai Monarrez Yesaki battled to a 7-5, 7-6 (4) victory over Sam Houston State's Karla De La Luz Montalvo. Senior Karina Traxler rounded out the advancing Mustangs with a victory over Texas A&M's Iulia Ivascu by a score of 6-2, 2-6, 1-0.

Three more Mustangs won their Round of 128 matches before falling in the second round. Senior Vivienne Kulicke followed up her flight title at the SMU Invitational with a win over Nidhi Surapaneni of North Texas by a score of 6-4, 1-6, 1-0.  Junior Tiffany Hollebeck beat North Texas's Sille Tranberg in straight sets 7-5, 6-3. Sophomore Nicole Petchey defeated Haruka Sasaki of North Texas 6-3, 6-7 (5), 1-0.

The doubles pair of Traxler and Hollebeck advanced to the Round of 32 with a 6-0 win over Laura Cabrera and Sophie Omoworare of UTSA.

SMU will play its singles Round of 32 and doubles Round of 16 matches Friday, Oct. 19. Sophomore Emma Pieroni and freshman Katherine Jakeway will also play consolation matches.
