It will be an SMU reunion in Cozumel.
Three mainstays of SMU's teams in the earlier part of this decade will gather this week in Mexico for the fourth annual event that pits 10 players from the Mackenzie Tour – PGA Tour Canada vs. 10 players from the Mackenzie Tour – PGA Tour Canada in a Presidents Cup-Ryder Cup-style competition.
The Go Vacaciones Cozumel Cup features Sam Fidone captaining Team Mackenzie Tour, while Harry Higgs will captain Team Latinoamerica and play alongside former Mustang Austin Smotherman. Action gets underway December 13 at Cozumel Country Club.
In an interesting twist, Fidone is a veteran of both Tours, playing in Canada most recently. This season, he won the Bayview Place Open in Victoria, British Columbia, and finished sixth on the Order of Merit.
Two weeks ago in Miami, at the season-ending Latinoamerica Tour Championship – Shell Championship, Higgs secured the Order of Merit title by $64 over Colombia's Nicolas Echavarria. In his last four starts, Higgs enjoyed a win (Diners Club Peru Open), finished third (Neuquen Argentina Classic), tied for second (113th Visa Argentina Open) and tied for fourth (Shell Championship).
The highlight of Smotherman's year came early when he won the Mexico Open in Tijuana and added four more top-10s along the way to finish fourth on the Order of Merit. Fidone, Higgs and Smotherman by virtue of their money-list finishes will move on to the 2019 Web.com Tour following this battle at the Cozumel Cup. Last week at the Web.com Tour Qualifying Tournament, Smotherman improved his Web.com Tour status by finishing 16th at the tournament in Chandler, Ariz.
