LAST GAME (W, 81-53 vs Cornell on Dec. 22): DALLAS (AP)
Jimmy Whitt Jr. had a career-high 22 points on 10-of-15 shooting on Saturday, and SMU built a 34-point lead before the 15-minute mark of the second half and cruised to an 81-53 win over Cornell. Whitt was 10 of 11 from the field in the first half and scored all of his 22 points before the break, the first Mustangs player to score 22 in a first half since Dec. 30, 2005. SMU (8-4) closed the first half on a 15-2 run and opened the second half with a 12-1 run to extend the lead to 56-22. Cornell (5-7) outscored the Mustangs 28-12 over the next 10:31, but the Big Red got no closer and SMU ended the game with three straight 3s.
Jahmal McMurray added 14 points, and
Feron Hunt and
Jarrey Foster scored 12 each for the Mustangs, who have won six of their last seven. Matt Morgan scored 23, Jake Kuhn added 11 and Josh Warren 10 for the Big Red.
THE SERIES VS. EAST CAROLINA (14-4): SMU holds a 14-4 series lead over East Carolina. SMU has won nine straight matchups, including seven straight regular season meetings. The past nine meetings have been since the teams met in The American with two matchups in the AAC Tournament, in 2015 and 2017 when the Mustangs went on to win the championship. The foes were 4-4 while both were in Conference USA. The first meeting between the two teams was on Dec. 21, 1985 at the Kentucky Invitational (W, 71-62).
LAST SEASON VS. EAST CAROLINA (W, 77-58 at ECU on Feb. 21, 2018): GREENVILLE, N.C. (SMU) - SMU started hot and never let up, blowing past ECU, 77-58. Production came from numerous Mustangs, as five SMU players finished with double-digit point totals.
Jahmal McMurray led the way, as he'd done frequently since SMU had been without Milton, with 20 points. McMurray was especially lethal from outside, knocking down 6-of-9 shots from 3-point range. As a team, 3-point shooting was a big reason for the uptick in offense. SMU shot better 50 percent while knocking down 11-of-21 from deep. Senior
Ben Emelogu II, who also was been battling through some nagging injuries, showed a return to form on Wednesday as well, dropping in 16 points while shooting 50 percent from the field. Emelogu was especially important early on as SMU jumped out to a lead by hitting three shots in the first five minutes. Emelogu also led the team with six assists on a night where SMU's ball movement seemed much crisper. McMurray and Emelogu were joined in double figures by Jimmy Whitt (13 points),
Akoy Agau (11 points), and
Elijah Landrum (11 points). Landrum's 11 points marked the first time in his young SMU career to reach double-digits. On top of balanced scoring, the Mustangs rebounded extremely well as a team. SMU finished with a healthy advantage on the glass because six Mustangs grabbed at least five rebounds, led by Emelogu and
William Douglas with seven apiece. It's the first time since the Northern Iowa game back in November where six Mustangs finished with 5+ rebounds. SMU's defense locked down the Pirates' offense, holding ECU to just 34 percent shooting from the floor and 28 percent from 3-point range. The Mustangs were able to force ECU into 13 turnovers which led to 19 points for SMU. (W, 86-61 vs. ECU on Jan 28): DALLAS (SMU) - SMU's offense was firing on all cylinders in Moody Coliseum as the Mustangs cruised past ECU, 86-61. All five starters for the Mustangs reached double-digits in the scoring column as SMU shot 62 percent from the floor as a team. Of the 86 points scored by the Mustangs, 80 of them were provided by the starters. Sophomore Jimmy Whitt and junior
Jahmal McMurray each provided 20 points on combined 17-of-23 shooting to lead the Mustangs. The total set a career-high for Whitt, while McMurray's 20 was a season-high. On top of his deadeye 9-of-11 shooting performance, Whitt also dished out six assists to lead the Mustangs in that category as well on his huge offensive night. Each starter shot at least 50 percent from the floor, and the five combined to shoot better than 60 percent from 3-point range (11-of-18). McMurray knocked down four of his five shots from range, while
Ben Emelogu II and
Ethan Chargois both hit three. ECU used hot shooting in the first half to keep the game relatively close with SMU going into the half with an 11-point lead. An 11-3 Mustang run to open the second half, coupled with the Pirates shooting just 15 percent from beyond-the-arc over the final 20 minutes, led to SMU blowing the game open and coasting to the win down the stretch.
UP NEXT: The Mustangs have a quick turnoaround to play at Tulane on Friday before a game at Connecticut on Jan. 10. The Mustangs' next home game is against Tulsa on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 5 p.m.

As an undergraduate, he was a three-year starter and letterman on the varsity basketball team and a member of the 1971-72 Southwest Conference Co-Championship team.
