LAST GAME (L, 76-51 vs [6/6] Cincinnati on Feb. 11): DALLAS (AP) — Kyle Washington had 17 points with eight rebounds and No. 6 Cincinnati remained undefeated in American Athletic Conference play, stretching its overall winning streak to 16 games with a 76-51 victory over short-handed SMU on Sunday. SMU was down to six available scholarship players for the rematch with preseason AAC player of the year
Shake Milton missing his third straight game because of an injured right hand. Freshman forward
Ethan Chargois sat out because of an ankle injury.
Jarrey Foster (left knee) and
Everett Ray (left foot) were already sidelined by season-ending injuries. The Bearcats (23-2, 12-0 AAC) missed their first seven shots in the game, but were down only 5-2 when they finally scored just more than 3 minutes in on a dunk by Nysier Brooks. That started a 9-0 run that put them ahead to stay. Jarron Cumberland had 12 points and Gary Clark 11 for Cincinnati, which finished 44 percent (28 of 63) overall from the field. Washington was 8-of-12 shooting.
Jimmy Whitt and
Jahmal McMurray each had 19 points for SMU, which has lost three straight and seven of 10. It was still only the second loss for the Mustangs in 40 home games coached by
Tim Jankovich. This was the most-lopsided loss by SMU (15-10, 5-7) in its five seasons as an AAC member. The previous low mark was a 76-56 loss at Cincinnati just a month ago, when the Mustangs still had a full roster. Cincinnati hit 11 of 13 shots during a stretch after halftime stretching its 11-point halftime lead to 62-27 midway through the second half.
THE SERIES VS. MEMPHIS (10-12+): SMU has won six straight matchups, including a 2016-17 season sweep. SMU opened the conference play with a 58-54 win at Memphis on Dec. 27, 2016, before rounding off the regular season with a 103-62 rout to claim the outright conference title on Senior Day. The Mustangs are 7-1+ against Memphis since both teams joined The American. (+9-12 overall, 6-1 in AAC; win in 2013-14 later vacated)
LAST SEASON VS. MEMPHIS (W, 103-62 at Moody Coliseum on March 4): DALLAS (AP) --
Sterling Brown and his SMU teammates cut the nets down at Moody Coliseum amid the confetti and streamers. Brown had 26 points and 10 rebounds in his final home game, his school-record 106th victory, and the 14th-ranked Mustangs clinched the outright American Athletic Conference title with a 103-62 victory over Memphis.
Sterling Brown had a long inbounds pass to
Semi Ojeleye for a breakaway one-handed dunk and hit consecutive 3-pointers in an early 15-2 run that put SMU in control of the game. Ojeleye, coming off a 9-of-9 shooting game Thursday, made his first three shots on the way to 19 points while finishing 5 of 6 with three 3-pointers.
Ben Moore, another senior, had 16 points. Keon Clergeot had 14 points to lead Memphis, which trailed by as many as 48 points in the second half and suffered its worst loss since 1947. The crowd included former President George W. Bush, a frequent attendee, along with Dallas Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle and Brown, the Hall of Fame coach who led SMU's impressive turnaround the past four seasons before unexpectedly leaving the job last summer when unable to come to terms on a new contract. While the postseason ban was for only one year, the Mustangs are still short-handed because of scholarship reductions that extend past this season. They played several games this season with only six available scholarship players.
Jonathan Wilfong, a walk-on senior who started for only the second time in his 52 career games, had a nifty pass to Moore that broke the game's only tie, which was 4-4. That was also the first of 10 consecutive SMU points in less than 2 1/2 minutes. When Wilfong hit a jumper with just over 6 minutes left for his first points, the Mustangs led 87-44 and the crowd erupted. (W, 58-54 at Memphis on Dec. 27): MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) --
Semi Ojeleye scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and SMU held off Memphis 58-54 in The American opener for both teams. Trailing by three at halftime, Memphis rallied to a 41-40 lead on Markel Crawford's 3-pointer, trailed, then led 45-44 after K.J. Lawson made two free throws.
Shake Milton's 3-pointer put SMU up 49-45 with 6:03 left, then
Sterling Brown hit a 3 for a 54-48 SMU lead. Memphis closed to 54-52 on Jeremiah Martin's two free throws and a layup, but Brown iced it with two free throws for the Mustangs. Brown scored 14 points with six assists and Milton added 10 for SMU (11-3), which held a 44-25 rebounding advantage but scored only four second-chance points off 15 offensive boards. Martin scored 16 points and Dedric Lawson added 14 for Memphis (9-4).
HEAD COACH TIM JANKOVICH... is in his second season at the helm at SMU after four seasons as the associate head coach. He is in his 35th season as a collegiate coach, and his 13th as a head coach. In 2016-17, SMU finished 30-5 and No. 11 in the AP poll after winning The American regular season and tournament titles en route to the NCAA Tournament. In 2015-16, he coached the Mustangs to a 9-0 start as SMU was eventually the last unbeaten team in the country at 18-0, and winning the Las Vegas Classic title during the season-opening streak. The Mustangs went 25-5, finishing the season ranked No. 24 after reaching a high of No. 8. In 2014-15, the Mustangs claimed the AAC regular season and tournament championships en route to the NCAA Tournament. SMU was the top seed in the 2014 NIT, reaching the title game. This is his 11th season as the leader of a Division I program, including five as head coach at Illinois State (2007-12) and four at North Texas (1993-97). As a head coach, he is 211-136 (.608) [54-15 at SMU (.783), including 38-2 at Moody Coliseum (started 36-0, second best in NCAA history)].
That includes a 104-64 mark at ISU where his teams recorded four top-three finishes in the Missouri Valley, reached the conference tournament final three times and earned four NIT bids. As an assistant or head coach, his teams are 628-375 (.626) with six regular season conference championships, four league tournament titles, nine NCAA Tournament appearances and eight NIT bids.
