LAST GAME (L, 52-37 at UCF on Feb. 17): SMUMustangs.com - ORLANDO, Fla. (SMU) - In a game where both offenses struggled to make shots consistently, UCF was able to hit enough to pull away from SMU to win, 52-37, on Saturday morning. SMU held the Knights under 40 percent shooting, but senior Ben Emelogu II was the only Mustang to score double-digits, finishing with 12 points. The energy was there once again for the shorthanded Mustangs, but SMU shot just 26 percent from the floor and 13 percent from 3-point range. Junior Jahmal McMurray, who entered the game averaging 23 points in the four games that leading scorer Shake Milton has missed, never found a rhythm offensively and finished with just seven points.  SMU once again played with just seven scholarship players, and those seven were not all completely healthy as injuries have greatly hampered the team this season. Both teams started slow out of the game, with just six points total scored in the first five minutes after the early 10 a.m. tip. While UCF never got into a great rhythm offensively either, the Knights hit seven shots from 3-point range to get separation away from the Mustangs.  Sophomore Jimmy Whitt logged his eighth game of the season with three or more steals while also grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds as a guard.

THE SERIES VS. EAST CAROLINA (13-4): SMU holds a 13-4 series lead over East Carolina. SMU has won eight straight matchups, including six straight regular season meetings. SMU won the first meeting this season, 86-61, in Dallas on Jan. 28. SMU is 4-0 at East Carolina, with a 2-0 mark since joining The American. Last season, SMU swept ECU with a 75-44, at East Carolina on Dec. 31, 2016, before an 86-46 rout at Moody Coliseum on Feb. 1, 2017. The Mustangs rounded off the season series with an 81-77 win in the American Athletic Conference Tournament Quarterfinals on March 10, 2017. Also during the winning streak, then-No. 20/21 SMU topped ECU, 62-54, in the American Athletic Conference Tournament on March 13, 2015. The first meeting between the two teams was on Dec. 21, 1985 at the Kentucky Invitational (W, 71-62).

LAST TIME VS. EAST CAROLINA (W, 86-61 vs. ECU on Jan 28): DALLAS (SMU) - SMU's offense was firing on all cylinders in Moody Coliseum as the Mustangs cruised past ECU, 86-61. All five starters for the Mustangs reached double-digits in the scoring column as SMU shot 62 percent from the floor as a team. Of the 86 points scored by the Mustangs, 80 of them were provided by the starters. Sophomore Jimmy Whitt and junior Jahmal McMurray each provided 20 points on combined 17-of-23 shooting to lead the Mustangs. The total set a career-high for Whitt, while McMurray's 20 was a season-high. On top of his deadeye 9-of-11 shooting performance, Whitt also dished out six assists to lead the Mustangs in that category as well on his huge offensive night. Each starter shot at least 50 percent from the floor, and the five combined to shoot better than 60 percent from 3-point range (11-of-18). McMurray knocked down four of his five shots from range, while Ben Emelogu II and Ethan Chargois both hit three. ECU used hot shooting in the first half to keep the game relatively close with SMU going into the half with an 11-point lead. An 11-3 Mustang run to open the second half, coupled with the Pirates shooting just 15 percent from beyond-the-arc over the final 20 minutes, led to SMU blowing the game open and coasting to the win down the stretch.
