ST. GEORGE, Utah (SMU) - Freshman Lauren Chappell posted the best result of her young SMU career by coming in at even-par for the tournament to grab a top-five finish and lead the Mustangs at the Entrada Classic.
Chappell's performance by her excellent first round on Monday, rolling in seven birdies on her way to a 5-under 67, matching the best round by any Mustang this season. The freshman finished the tournament with 13 birdies and one eagle.Â
"Lauren was firing on all cylinders," head coach Jeanne Sutherland said. "She was in a lot of rough place in the practice round, and I think she learned from it. It was fun to see her do so well. She' been inching up on that. She's looked good all semester and getting better every day."
SMU's depth was on display at the Entrada Classic as four different Mustangs posted an under-par round.Â
Sophomore Faith Summers shot under-par in both round two and three (76-70-71—217) to finish in a tie for 12th at 1-over.Â
Fellow sophomore Kenzie Wright joined Summers in the top-15 at 3-over. Wright's second round 69 was the second-best round posted by the Mustangs at the Entrada Classic, trailing only Chappell's 66.Â
Ana Paula Ramirez provided the Mustangs final under-par round during Tuesday's final round, jumping 16 spots on the individual leaderboard over the final 18 holes to finish in a tie for 29th at 10-over.
"We have great depth and are a really balanced team," Sutherland said. "We have to get to the point where we're playing well on the same day. That's our need and what we have to work towards."
As a team, the Mustangs finished sixth in the 14-team field, climbing one spot over the final day of the tournament.Â
The Mustangs are back in action on March 23-25, traveling to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, for the LSU Tiger Golf Classic.
