Â
LAST GAME (L, 69-56 vs [25/rv] Houston on Feb. 28): SMUMustangs.com - DALLAS (SMU) - SMU could never find enough offensive consistency on senior night at Moody Coliseum, falling to No. 25 Houston, 69-56. The Mustangs struggled to find many easy looks against the Cougars' stout defense, and shots from outside didn't fall with any regularity. SMU hit just 3-of-12 shots from 3-point range. On the other end of the court, Houston was able to knock down 9 3-pointers. Junior
Jahmal McMurray continued his impressive play offensively, leading the Mustangs with 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting. McMurray was able to knock down some difficult shots as Houston's defense made a point of contesting his looks. Senior Ben Emeolgu II joined McMurray in double-figures with 14 points in his home finale. With shots not consistently going down, SMU's offense turned to driving the lane in an attempt to get to the free throw line. The Mustangs were able to get to the line often with that approach, hitting 19-of-26 free throws compared to Houston's 6-of-8 mark. Houston was able to force the Mustangs into 15 turnovers that led directly to 17 of the Cougars' points. Meanwhile, SMU was only able to turn Houston's 11 turnovers into four points. While SMU was able to accumulate a narrow advantage on the boards, helped by freshman guard
Elijah Landrum's team-high six rebounds, Houston was also able to take more advantage of extra opportunities. The Cougars' finished with nine second-chance points, compared to SMU's two despite having just one more offensive rebound.
Â
THE SERIES VS. USF (9-3+): The Mustangs have won six straight regular season meetings, including 79-39Â on Dec. 31 at Moody Coliseum to open the 2017-18 series. In 2016-17, SMU won the lone meeting, 84-65, on Jan. 4 at Moody Coliseum. In 2015-16, the Mustangs swept USF with a 72-58 win at home on Jan. 2, 2016 and a 92-58 victory at USF on Feb. 7, 2016. The Mustangs are 5-0 at home and 2-1 on the road since joining the AAC, (+ officially 8-3, win from 2013-14 later vacated).
Â
LAST TIME VS. USF (W, 79-39 at Moody Coliseum) DALLAS (SMU) - On a night when the SMU offense wasn't clicking on all cylinders early on, the Mustang defense was tremendous for all 40 minutes. Using that stifling defense and a second-half offensive surge, SMU dominated USF on its way to a 79-39. In the second half, SMU's offense sprang to life by hitting its first eight attempts to blow the game open with an 26-1 run through the first eight minutes of the half. Meanwhile, the defense only upped its already strong first half effort. USF's first basket of the half didn't come until the 11:48 mark. Junior
Shake Milton led the way offensively for the Mustangs, dropping in 14 points, 11 of which came in the second half. Fellow juniors
Jahmal McMurray and
Jarrey Foster joined Milton in double-figures, each scoring 12 points. Sophomore
Jimmy Whitt rounded out the double-digit scorers, finishing with 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds. The Mustangs scored more points in the second half alone (51) than the Bulls managed for the entire game. SMU held USF to just 28 percent from the field, including a 3-of-19 mark from 3-point range. The Bulls finished with more turnovers (21) than field goals (14). SMU contested essentially every shot the Bulls put up, leading to the low field goal percentage. USF scored zero points in transition, compared to SMU's 14 fast-break points. The Mustangs also dominated the Bulls on the glass, finishing with a plus-16 rebounding margin. The Mustangs dominated the game in essentially every statistically category in the 40-point win. SMU finished with a better shooting percentage from the field and the free-throw line, fewer turnovers, more rebounds, more blocks, more steals and more assists. While SMU never trailed, USF locked up the score at 11 with just under seven minutes left in the first half. A 43-6 run was the Mustangs' response.
