Adams, Whitfield Garner All-Conference Honors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (SMU/AAC) – Senior McKenzie Adams was named to the All-American Athletic Conference Third Team, and was honored with the league's Ambassador Award. Ariana Whitfield was named to the All-Freshman team, league officials announced Friday.

Adams finished the regular season eighth in the league in scoring with 16.6 points per game. She scored a career-high 38 points against Nicholls in the season opener, which ranks third in a game at SMU. She eclipsed 30 points again against Nevada, scoring 35, which is tied for fifth at SMU. Adams scored in double figures 24 times, including 14 of 16 conference games, with 10 games of 20 or more points.

The Frisco, Texas, native ranks 11th at SMU with 1, 312 career points in three seasons. She has 482 points this year, ranking 10th in a season at SMU. She is eighth on the single-season chart with 126 free throws, shooting a team-high 80.8 percent, sixth in The American.

Whitfield averaged 7.4 points during her first year on the Hilltop. She led the Mustangs with 37 made 3-pointers, and was third on the team with 61 assists, trailing a pair of seniors. The guard was second on the team with 37 steals. The Houston native reached double figures eight times, including three conference games, and scored a season-high 18 points against Abilene Christian. Whitfield had seven assists in a comeback win against Tulsa, tied for the second most in a game by a freshman at SMU.

Adams becomes the 21st player in program history to earn all-conference accolades, while Whitfield is the 10th player named to a freshman or newcomer team. The league's 12 head coaches vote on all conference awards.
