SAN DIEGO (SMU) - SMU's 1V8+ boat used two strong performances to race to a third-place finish over the weekend at the San Diego Crew Classic. 

Competing in the Women's Collegiate Varsity Cal Cup, the boat of Emily Fogg, Juliet Traylor, Brittany Rigg, Lauren Vanek, Alyssa Sands, Erin Pierce, Brittany Courteau, Megan Scott, and Madison van Meel used a second-place finish in its heat on Saturday to qualify for the final on Sunday. The Mustangs narrowly missed out on winning the heat, finishing just two seconds behind Sacramento State.

In the final, SMU finished third in what was a very tightly contested race. The Mustangs finished just eight seconds behind the winner and two seconds behind the second-place boat. 

SMU's 2V8+ also turned in a strong performance on Sunday, finishing runner-up in the C final by cutting 14 seconds off the mark from the qualification heat on Saturday.  

The Mustangs earned a petite final appearance in the 4V+ after a fourth-place finish in the qualification heat. SMU went on to finish fifth in the petite final on Sunday.

The Mustangs are back on the water on April 6, traveling to Sarasota, Florida, for the Sunshine State Invitational.
