CARROLLTON, Texas (SMU) - The Mustangs wrapped up play at the Bruzzy Challenge on Tuesday, led by sophomore Kenzie Wright's 29th-place finish at 17-over.
Wright fired the Mustangs best round of tournament on Monday, shooting an even par 72 in round one.
Freshman Lauren Chappell finished the tournament just a couple strokes behind Wright, finishing 34th at 19-over. On a tough scoring day with an average round of 80, junior Brigitte Dunne used a final round score of 78 to climb up 11 spots on the leaderboard to finish at 39th. Dunne's 78 was the Mustangs' best score on Tuesday.
"It was a tough day out there," head coach Jeanne Sutherland said. "We have to learn how to separate mistakes. If you make a mistake, you don't compound it by trying harder to score on the next shot. It's okay to make a bogey on a day like today. If we learn from this and get better, it'll be a good tournament for us."
The Mustangs finished in a tie for 10th in the 15-team field. Texas A&M claimed both the team and individual titles as Maddie Szeryk finished the tournament at even.
The American Conference Championship is next up for the Mustangs on April 15-17. Last season, both Dunne and the Mustangs finished runner-up.
"At this point, our regular season is behind us, but our entire season is in front of us with what we want to accomplish," Sutherland said. "We want to win the AAC, get to regionals, and get to nationals. We're in control of our own destiny."
