OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – SMU's
Madison Steed captured the Collegiate Reining Championship at the 2018 National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Derby in Oklahoma City, Okla.
Steed captured the title with 222.5 points on San Juan Whiz, besting second-place finisher Caroline Gute's (South Carolina) 220.0 and a 219.5 from Georgia's Annebeth Payne. The Cochrane, Alberta, Canada product is the first Mustang in program history to capture the competition crown.
"Madison drew a great horse and was able to show off the talented showman that she is," SMU assistant coach
McKenzie Lantz said.
Fellow Mustang
Holly Lansidel scored a 206.5 to finish 10th overall.
"Holly has had a record year and it was great to see her back in this competition for a second year," Lantz added. "We are looking forward to a great upcoming season with these two reining leaders."
Steed and Lansidel were two of 12 collegiate riders selected to compete in this year's competition. The NRHA Derby runs for one week each summer in Oklahoma City and showcases the world's best reining horses and riders.
