DALLAS (SMU) – SMU had three chances to win the match before LSU won the fifth set for a 3-2 win in the championship match of the DoubleTree Invitational in Moody Coliseum Saturday (25-27, 25-20, 25-23, 22-25, 19-17).
Hannah Jacobs led the Mustangs for the second straight match, scoring 15 kills, and
Brittany Adams added 10 kills with 18 digs for her fourth straight double-double. The Mustangs could not stop Taylor Bannister, who finished with 36 kills to lead the Tigers on her way to MVP honors.
Jacobs was named to the all-tournament team, finishing with 36 kills and a .233 attack percentage.
Montana Watts picked up her second Best Libero award, averaging 4.90 digs per set in the two five-set affairs.
SMU trailed 11-8 in the fifth set, but scored three straight to tie the score. SMU eventually took the lead, and the Mustangs led 14-13, 15-14, and 17-16, all with serves to win the match, but could not find a way to score. LSU eventually rallied for three unanswered to win.
Watts had 21 digs to lead all players, and Patterson had 14 with 24 assists for a double-double. Eva Linded and
Rachel Woulfe each scored eight kills for SMU.
The Mustangs forced the decisive set with a 25-22 win in the fourth, despite LSU outscoring SMU 18-11 on the attack. SMU took advantage of five LSU service errors and scored on four blocks. The Mustangs did not miss a serve in the fourth set, but a pair of misses in the fifth aided the Tigers in the win.
LSU won the second and third sets, the latter by just two points, after SMU outlasted the Tigers for a 27-25 win in the first. The Mustangs led 24-21 in the opening set before a late charge by the Tigers forced extra points, but SMU never gave up the lead.
SMU is at home Friday and Sunday for the first weekend of American Athletic Conference matches. The Mustangs face Connecticut Friday night, and Sunday's match against Temple will be on the American Digital Network.
