Mustangs Compete at Sweet Briar, South Carolina Starting Friday

Sep 20

DALLAS (SMU)—Coming off a dominant home exhibition win last weekend, the SMU Equestrian team readies to face Sweet Briar College at The Harriet Howell Rogers Riding Center in Virginia, before traveling to One Wood Farm in Blythewood, South Carolina for Saturday's matchup.

In addition to hosting the Hunt Seat only meet, the Sweet Briar Vixens will also put on a scrimmage that features the Lynchburg College Hornets at the same time.

At 10 a.m. ET (9:00 a.m. CT) on Saturday morning, both English and Western riders will face the No. 8-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks. Live scoring is available at https://bit.ly/2NsFhGH

Head coach Carol Gwin has coaching connections to both Sweet Briar and South Carolina.

"Sweet Briar was my first job out of college. I worked for Paul Cronin, who was the Director of Riding, for four years, from 1992-96," Gwin said. "He and the program really gave me a big jump start in my career as a college coach. My kids have never seen the beautiful campus and equestrian facility that Sweet Briar has, and I think it's a really quality program. So, we're excited to compete against them on Friday."

After picking up the Western squad, the team will then go to South Carolina where Gwin worked from 2010-14. South Carolina is also Assistant Hunt Seat Coach Amber Henter's alma mater.

Henter earned Ariat All-America and All-SEC accolades for South Carolina and was team captain three years in a row (2012-15), helping the Gamecocks to three conference championships and a national title.

"We're eager to return back to South Carolina to compete," Gwin said.
