DALLAS, Texas (SMU) - Finishing out a winning weekend, No. 6 SMU Equestrian earned a thrilling, 9-8-3, victory over No. 8 South Carolina on Saturday morning at One Wood Farm, in Blythewod, S.C.
After a strong showing in Equitation Over Fences, the Mustangs were neck and neck with the Gamecocks in a competitive match that came down to the final point in Reining.
Nora Gray and
Haylee Schoonover's performances earned them Most Outstanding Player honors in Equitation Over Fences and Horsemanship, respectively.
ENGLISH
In Equitation Over Fences, SMU's
Kelsie Brittan, riding Leon for a score of 80,
Brett Burlington on Tattoo scoring a 79, and Gray, riding Joe for an 88, earned points in the event in which the Mustangs scored 3-1 over South Carolina.
In Equitation on the Flat, SMU and South Carolina went head to head in a 2-2 event finish.
Vivian Yowan scoring a 68 on Toby, and
Haley Zimmerman scoring a 58 on Ella, put points on the board, while,
Kirsten Ostling, riding Volan, scored a 54 to hold off South Carolina competitor Billi Brandner with a tie.
WESTERN
In Horsemanship, the Mustangs tied the Gamecocks, 2-2. Schoonover on Reggie scoring 75, and
Mallory Vroegh with a 73.5 on Jazz, contributed points, while
Kara Vickery, riding Amos, tied with South Carolina's Quinn Brandt with a 72.
In Reining,
Aubrey Alderman scored a 69 on Wrangler for the point. In the final moments, the Gamecocks tied up the score 8-8, as
Savannah Ostner, earning a 69.5 on Stoner, garnered the final point for the Mustangs, clinching the win.

On October 13, the Mustangs will host the No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs at the Dallas Equestrian Center.
