Petrucelli's Postgame Thoughts
Cincinnati (SMU) – The Mustangs blanked Cincinnati, 3-0, to continue their perfect conference start in a road win on Thursday at Gettler Stadium.
Â
It didn't take the Mustangs long to break the seal against the Bearcats. In the ninth minute,
Courtney Sebazco swiped a pass in the attacking third and quickly delivered the ball to
Allie Thornton. The junior striker was able to beat Cincinnati keeper for the go-ahead goal, her seventh of the season.
Â
Celiana Torres provided a highlight-reel goal in the final minutes of the first half. After Cincinnati was called for a foul about 30 yards out from the goal, Torres unloaded on a rocket that surprised the Bearcats for the game's second goal. In the second period, redshirt senior
Vanessa Valadez was called upon to take a PK in the 65
th minute after a Bearcat handball in the goal area. Valadez stayed perfect in her PK career (7-for-7) as she pocketed the ball in the top corner.
Â
Catie Brown anchored the Mustang defense in goal, recording her second shutout of the season. The team limited the Cincinnati offense to just three shots on goal and six total.
 Â
The home loss was the Bearcats first in over 23 months (18 games) at Gettler Stadium. The Mustangs remain off to their best start since 2006 and have posted their first 3-0-0 start to American Athletic Conference play.
 Â
Next on the slate, the Mustangs face ECU on Sunday at noon.
