Cross Country Impresses With Third-Place Finish in Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (SMU) – Mustang Cross Country finished in third-place in the highly-competitive Louisville Classic with junior Hannah Miller anchoring the squad with a fourth-place finish at Sawyer State Park.

The loaded 29-team field included No. 20 Michigan and other marquee programs such as Kentucky, Auburn, Louisville, Mississippi State and Marquette. The Mustangs stood out with the top names in their third-place finish, after placing first in the first two events of the season. The 20th-ranked Michigan Wolverines won the event with 46 points followed by Eastern Kentucky who ended up with 120. SMU sat 15 spots ahead of fourth-place Kentucky.

Hannah Miller, who had won the first two races of the season and garnered two American Athletic Conference Cross Country Athlete of the Week awards, was near the front the pack near the whole race coming in 15 seconds behind the leader, Dorcas Wasike of host Louisville. Svenja Ojstersek wrapped up the race in 11th-place and a time of 17:07.0.

Senior Anneke Grogan used a late charge to jump up 10 spots in the final kilometer into 31st place. Grogan crossed the line in 17:40.5, an improvement of over 17 seconds since the North Texas 5K two weeks ago. Charlotte Tara Murphy finished 20 spots behind Grogan in 51st place with a 18:02.5 time. Robin Montemayor's time (18:28.1) was nearly half a minute better than her last meet and good for 79th.

Rounding out the SMU contingent, Allison Esparza (18:57.2) placed in 114th and freshman Olivia Lackner recorded a 19:15.6, good for 151st of the 226.

Next on the slate, the Mustangs wrap up the regular season at the Texas A&M Invite. The meet is set for Saturday Oct. 13.
