Mustangs Lose In Four Sets At East Carolina

Box Score GREENVILLE, N.C. (SMU) – The SMU volleyball team dropped to 2-2 in American Athletic Conference action after a 3-1 loss at East Carolina Sunday afternoon (25-21, 16-25, 25-23, 25-18). Brittany Adams led the Mustangs with 15 kills, and freshman Hannah Jacobs added 13 in the loss.

East Carolina (10-4, 2-1 The American) took the fourth set 25-18 to end the match. Leading 11-9, the Pirates began pulling away, taking a 16-10 lead. SMU was unable to regain control in the loss.

Montana Watts had 18 of SMU's 49 digs. Offensively, SMU hit .267 with 55 kills, but ECU scored 55 kills with a .328 attack percentage.
The Pirates took a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-23 win in the third set. SMU lead 21-20, but a 3-0 run by ECU gave the Pirates a two-point advantage. The Mustangs erased the first set-point chance with a kill by Nordmann, but could not overcome the late momentum shift. The Pirates scored a kill for the next point to take the advantage in the match.

Patterson served three aces in the first set, including two on her first trip to the line to give SMU a 5-0 lead, but ECU overcame the deficit for a 25-21 win. Jacobs led all attackers with six kills in the set for the Mustangs, but the Pirates hit .394 with kills on four of their last five points for the victory.

SMU responded with a dominant 25-16 win in the second set. Adams scored five kills to pace the offense for the Mustangs, and SMU had 17 digs after just 13 in the first set. ECU kept it close early, trailing by two midway through the set, 15-13, but the Mustangs limited the Pirates to just three more points while outscoring them 10-3 down the stretch.

The Mustangs (5-9, 2-2 The American) return home Friday to face in-state rival Houston in Moody Coliseum at 7 p.m.
