Â
DALLAS (SMU) -Â The SMU Men's golf program gets its 2018 fall season started by traveling to Kiawah Island, South Carolina to participate in The Invitational at The Ocean Course, hosted by the College of Charleston.
Â
THE EVENT:Â Play will span three days and feature 54 holes of stroke play Sunday, Sept. 9 to Tuesday, Sept. 11. Teams will play 18 holes a round with tee times spanning from 11:00 a.m. to 1:20 p.m. on Monday, 8:00 a.m.to 10:20 a.m. on Tuesday and an 8:00 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday.
Â
EVENT HISTORY:Â SMU was slated to compete in the tournament last year but it was canceled due to Hurricane Irma. Tennessee State shot a three-round 850 (-14) to take home the team title in 2016.
Â
THE COURSE: The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort has played host to the 2007 Senior PGA and 2012 PGA Championships. It will also host the 2021 PGA Championship. The Ocean Course is only the fourth course to host each of the PGA of America's major championships. Probably no other golf course in the world outside of the United Kingdom and Ireland is affected as much by the wind. Located on the eastern-most end of Kiawah Island, The Ocean Course has more seaside holes than any other course in the Northern Hemisphere.
Â
THE FIELD:Â There are 14 teams participating in the tournament:Â Akron, College of Charleston, Charleston Southern, Elon, Francis Marion, George Mason, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, High Point, James Madison, Maryland, Ole Miss, SMU and Western Carolina.
Â
REPRESENTING SMU:Â Competing for the Mustangs will beÂ
McClure Meissner,Â
Noah Goodwin,
Charles Osborne,
Ben Wong and
Jackson Markham.
Justin Thompson will compete as an individual.
