Women's Soccer Announces 2019 Signing Class

DALLAS, Texas (SMU) – Mustang women's soccer announced their six athlete 2019 signing class including three local players and one player joining the team this Spring semester.

 

Head Coach Chris Petrucelli thoughts on the class…

"It's a pretty talented class with players that cover all parts of the field. There's an attacking presence, there's a playmaking presence, there's talented defenders, and outstanding goalkeeping. All of these players are capable of stepping in and playing immediately. As a whole, we made our team better with this class. The team is now deeper and more talented. We looking forward to getting everyone together and seeing how much they can accomplish." 

 

JEWEL BOLAND | Portland, Ore.

Jewel Elizabeth Boland comes to SMU after two years at Highline College in Des Moines, Washington. Boland impressed in her two years spent with the program winning two Region MVPs as well as being named the 2017 NWAC Championship MVP.  Boland was nominated to the all-star teams in both her seasons with the team. While with Highline, she broke the school record for goals with 36 in the 2017 season and nearly breaking the school career assist mark. Boland scored the game-winning goal in the NWAC Championship final as Highline won their first Women's Soccer Championship in 2017. Before Highline, Boland played club ball for the Westside Timbers from 2011-2014 and also in the Portland Thorns Academy as well as Spartans FC most recently. Boland has experience with ODP, playing in the program from 2011-13 and has been invited to three national team camps. In high school, she was first team all-league as a senior and captained her squad in both seasons while also winning many athlete of the week honors at Portland's Parkrose High School.

Apart from soccer, Jewel was also a decorated athlete across three different sports. The Portland native, played three years of varsity basketball. She ran on the track team, making it as far as state in the 200-meter dash.  Her best finish was a ninth-place finish at state her freshman year, with multiple trips to districts meet. Boland has joined the Mustangs this semester and is an anticipated Health Science Major.

"Individually, Jewel is a talented goal scorer. She's athletic, powerful and knows how to put the ball in the net.  That's a hard thing to find these days. Beyond her goal scoring abilities, she's an outstanding soccer player.  We're excited for her to join us." 

 

SADIE WINTERGALEN – Phoenix, Ariz.

Sadie spent her High School career playing with Xavier College Prep in Phoenix as well as with the Phoenix Rising FC. Wintergalen was named to the Arizona ODP All-Tournament Team, in 2016 and was a regional ODP Invitee. She also was selected to the 2016 Arizona State Cup Best XI in May of 2016. She spent two seasons competing for her school landing an AIA All-First Team selection in 2016. Recently, Sadie played with the Scottsdale Blackhawks as they earned a spot in the 2018 US Youth Soccer National Championship.

 "Sadie is a real pacey wide player.  She can get behind teams.  She serves a good ball and gets up and down the flank constantly. She gives us some quality in the wide areas of the field." 

 

WAYNY-NATASHA BALATA NGUENIGN  |  Montreal, Quebec

Wayny Balata hails from Montreal where her extensive resume includes time spent playing with the Canadian national team. Wayny has recently played with Canada at the U-17 World Cup in Uruguay where the Canadians finished in fourth place, their best ever finish, with Balata playing every game. Wayny also played with Canada U-17s in the CONCACAF Championship where they won the bid to the World Cup and took home the bronze last summer.

Wayny has also played with her provincial team since the age of 14. With the Quebec team, she was named Canada's Top Player and made all-star teams while also winning a gold medal all while captaining the squad.

With her club team of Lakeshore SC and NGG Soccer Association, Wayny was named female youth player of excellence in the province for 2017. She helped her club win back-to-back gold medals at the Canadian National Championships in 2016 and 2017. As the captain of the squad in 2018, the team won the silver medal at the event.

Balata attended High School at College de Montreal and Notre Dame de Montreal where she was named 2016 Student Athlete of the Year as well as MVP, defensive player of the year and HOPE athlete of the year. She lettered there for five years while also earning academic distinctions in Science and Technology, Financial Education, History and Physical Education. Balata hopes to be a pre-med major at SMU.

 "Wayny is coming off an outstanding performance in the U17 World Cup for Canada.  I thought she was one of Canada's best players. Her physical presence in the midfield is a factor.  She can dominate a game physically and she's a very good soccer player.  Her understanding of the game is outstanding.  She has all the qualities to do quite well in college soccer." 


SERENA EBOH | Southlake, Texas

Serena has played her club ball with Solar Soccer Club. She was a part of a team that won conference championships for four straight seasons from 2015-2018 and were Developmental Academy runners up.  Eboh has also been a standout competing with her high school, Southlake Carroll, playing for two seasons with the Dragons. With Eboh, Southlake Carroll won back-to-back district tiles.

Away from the pitch, Serena was a decorated Track athlete, with several high district finishes in the 100 meter and a 5thplace finish at the Dallas Area meet. 

Serena comes from a family of college athletes as her brother, Obi, is member of the Stanford Cardinal Football team. A national honor society member, Serena hopes to be a pre-dental major at SMU. She chose SMU because of the high academic standard and because of her admiration for the women's soccer team.

"Serena is a quick outside back.  She is very difficult to beat.  Her one on one defending is outstanding.  She gets up and down the field with ease.  She joins the attack as well, so she fits very well how we want to play coming out of the back."

 

TATUM SUTHERLAND | Cleburne, Texas

Sutherland is another local player in the 2019 signing class. She played her club ball at Solar SC where she played with fellow Mustang commit Serena Eboh. With Sutherland, the team won numerous conference championships and represented as runners up at the Developmental Academy Cup. The talented keeper played for her school program at Joshua High, starting in net in her freshman year in one of the most competitive districts in high school soccer. Sutherland list of honors include a US Soccer Training invite and a PDP invite. Sutherland was also district and county Keeper of the Year as a sophomore when she recorded 17 shutouts in the season, good for second in the Fort Worth area. Sutherland would repeat the feat and win All-District from 2015-17 as Joshua won three consecutive district championships and a pair of Area titles in 2016 and 2017.

Sutherland racked up notable achievements outside of soccer with Outstanding Achievement award in an array of academic fields as well as citizenship and character honors. Tatum has also spent additional pitch time as a referee where she has reached grade 7 and 8 licenses and was awarded a H.E.R. scholarship, national referee scholarship given to three young females referees across the country. Sutherland chose to come play on the Hilltop because of the SMU atmosphere and the great business school.  She plans on being a pre-health/dental major.

"Tatum just keeps getting better and better.  She's very quick and her reflexes are outstanding.  She's really good with her feet.  She gives us a real option of having the goalkeeper help us play out of the back. She's proven she can play on high level. She has all of the tools to be an outstanding goalkeeper."

 

MADELINE HANSEN | Allen, Texas

 Action Hansen

Madeline (Maddy) Hansen was born in Winfield, Illinois and has grown up in Allen, Texas. Hansen played her club soccer with Sting for the majority of her youth career before moving over to Solar Youth Developmental program in 2018-19. The striker was captain of her Sting squad under head coach Brian Flanagan from 2007-2015, frequently leading the team in goals.

Hansen spent some time playing under Kat Webb, a former Mustang soccer standout. Maddy also added a US Soccer Training Invite to her resume, earning the invite from 2012-2015.

Apart from soccer, Hansen was a three-year letter winner in Track at Allen High School, specializing in the 400 meter and 800 meters. She joins her father, Mike, down the collegiate sports path, as her played football at Illinois from 1994-1997. She was attracted to the Mustang program because of the coaching staff along with the academic reputation of the school, the facilities and beautiful campus. Hansen plans on being a business major while on the Hilltop.

"Maddy is extremely hard working. She covers a lot of ground during games and she's shown she has the ability to score goals. She can play central, she can play wide but she's an attacking presence no matter where she plays."



The Mustang return to the pitch for their four-game spring slate beginning with a road matchup against Oklahoma State on March 30.
