Mustangs Shutout North Texas 2-0 In Home Opener

DALLAS (SMU) –  The SMU women's soccer program shut out North Texas 2-0 to earn its first win of the season inside Washburne Stadium on Sunday.

After a brief feeling-out period, the Mustangs (1-1-0, 0-0-0 ACC) grabbed control of the game and never looked back. Libby Jannereth gave SMU the lead in the 20th minute, and Lisa Beyer extended the lead in the 74th to seal the win for SMU.

SMU outshot North Texas (0-1-0, 0-0-0 American) 16-7 and only allowed one shot on goal in the game. It was the Mustangs' 24th shutout under Nicole Nelson.

Six Mustangs recorded two or more shots, with Kaylee Noble leading the way with three. Kamiya Beck, Sarah Bonnecaze and Julianne Richter each recorded an assist.

SMU started fast as Mustangs thought they had an early goal as Beck netted one in the third minute, but it was called offside, and the game remained tied.

Both teams battled to grab control of the game until Beck sent an arcing cross across the box right to Jannereth, who headed the ball into the back of the net to give SMU the lead. It was the sophomore's first goal of her career.

SMU continued to generate opportunities, but headed to the half with a one-goal lead.

The Mustangs came out of the half determined not to take their foot off the gas as they outshot UNT 9-2 in the period. The SMU backline did their part, never giving the Mean Green a chance to counter.

Beyer put the finishing touches on the night as she danced around a defender before sliding one into the back of the net to put SMU up two and score her first career goal.

OTHER NOTES
  • Sunday's Match was the 24th game between SMU and North Texas. SMU now leads the series 17-4-3 and is 11-2-1 at home versus UNT.
  • The Mustangs have won the last four matches against North Texas
  • SMU has now outscored UNT 59-22 in 24 games played.
