McMurray was 5 of 9 from 3-point range and 9 of 15 overall. Ethan Chargois added 14 points and Jimmy Whitt Jr. had 11 points and 11 rebounds for his second career double-double. On Nov. 29, 2018, Whitt had SMU's first triple-double since 1999. The Mustangs led 61-45 on Chargois' jumper with 7:57 left in the game. Tulane had a 14-4 run that included seven points in a 21-second span to get the deficit down to six. But Chargois answered with a 3-pointer with 2:11 left and the Mustangs held on. SMU (10-4, 2-0) opened the game on an 8-0 run and led 35-25 at the break. The Mustangs had a 9-0 run early in the second half to take their largest lead at 46-28. Samir Sehic had 20 points and 15 rebounds, Jordan Cornish added 17 points and Caleb Daniels scored 14 for Tulane (4-10, 0-2).

COACHING FOR LITERACY: The game versus ECU was SMU's Fight for Literacy Game in partnership with Coaching for Literacy. This is the fifth straight season SMU has participated in the event to support a local literacy program partner (Readers 2 Leaders). To raise awareness about the issues connected to illiteracy, the SMU coaching staff wore Green for Literacy. Fans can join the #Fight4Literacy by pledging a donation for each assist recorded by the Mustangs over four games from from Jan. 2 - Jan. 12 (https://pledgeit.org/mustangsforliteracy). Jonathan Wilfong (SMU '17) and Andrew Renshaw, two then-high school seniors from Memphis, Tennessee, founded Coaching for Literacy in 2012.

THE SERIES VS. CONNECTICUT (9-3) (7-3+): The Mustangs split a pair of meetings last season, winning 80-73 in the first round of the American Athletic Conference Tournament after falling 63-52 at Connecticut on Jan. 25. SMU won both games in 2016-17 after the two teams split the 2015-16 season series. The first game in the series was an 80-66 Mustang victory in Dallas on Dec. 30, 1965. In 2014-15, the Mustangs won two of three meetings with the Huskies last season, including a 62-54 victory in the championship of the American Athletic Conference Tournament. The other meetings in Dallas were the opening of the renovated Moody Coliseum on Jan. 4, 2014 (W, 74-65 over then #17/15 Connecticut) and ESPN College Gameday on Feb. 14, 2015 (W, 73-55). (+7-3 officially)

LAST SEASON VS. CONNECTICUT (W, 80-73 at Amway Center in Orlando on March 8, 2018): ORLANDO, Fla. - Akoy Agau provided the best performance of his Mustang career, while Ben Emelogu II and Jahmal McMurray each were vital offensively as SMU advanced at the AAC Championship, knocking off UConn, 80-73. Agau finished with a career-high 21 points on exceptional 7-of-8 shooting to give the Mustangs a steady offensive threat in both halves. The senior was the only player on either team to score double-digits in both halves. Emelogu scored a team-high 23 points, including knocking down four shots from 3-point range. Emelogu once again showed great energy to lead the Mustangs with eight rebounds as a guard. McMurray, who's been the most consistent scorer in absence of leading scorer Shake Milton, once again delivered, scoring 19 points. The big games by Agau and Emelogu allowed McMurray to be a little more selective with his shots, leading to an efficient 8-of-14 night. SMU used hot shooting from Emelogu and McMurray to build a lead in the first half with each hitting two-apiece. As a team, the Mustangs buried 7-of-13 shots from 3-point range in the first 20 minutes. On top of that, Agau scored 10 first-half points and was a perfect 3-for-3 from the floor. The result was 42 first-half points, the most in a game without Milton, and a 19-point halftime lead. UConn didn't go quietly, cutting the lead to single-digits before the first stoppage of the second half. However, the Mustangs had an answer. McMurray and Emelogu combined to score 13 of SMU's next 16 points, and the lead was extended a game-high 21 points at the 11:42 mark. The Huskies kept pushing down the stretch, but the Mustangs' lead was too much to overcome. SMU knocked down eight big free-throws over the final minute of play to close out the Huskies. The Mustangs were good at the line for the entire contest, hitting nearly 80 percent of their 23 shots. (L, 63-52 at Connecticut on Jan. 25) STORRS, Conn. (SMU) - In a defensive battle on the road in conference play, SMU couldn't find enough offense to pull off the win, falling to UConn 63-52. Junior Shake Milton led SMU in the scoring column, dropping in 18 points while also grabbing seven rebounds. Milton has reached at least 15 points in each of the last four games and in five of the last six contests. Sophomore Jimmy Whitt had the most efficient offensive night for the Mustangs, scoring 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting. SMU started hot, hitting three of its first six shots to jump out to an 8-0 lead. From there however, buckets became much more difficult to come by. The Mustangs finished the game shooting just 28 percent from the floor while scoring a season-low 52 points. While shots from the floor wouldn't fall, SMU did help itself by putting together its best free-throw shooting performance of the season. The Mustangs hit 13-of-15 free ones to finish at a season-high 87 percent. While SMU only had one more turnovers than the Huskies, turnovers turned out to be the difference in the game. The Mustangs' 10 turnovers turned into 21 of UConn's points, while SMU only generated five points from the nine turnovers by the Huskies. While the team rebounding numbers finished even, it was a tale of two halves. SMU dominated the boards in the first half. The Mustangs finished the first 20 minutes with nearly as many offensive rebounds (10) as UConn had total rebounds (13). However, in the second half, the Huskies were able to outrebound the SMU by 10 to even up the battle on the glass. Senior Ben Emelogu II led the Mustangs in the rebounding category by tying a career-high with 10 rebounds.
