FORT WORTH, Texas (SMU) – No. 5 SMU fell to No. 6 TCU in a close competition that came down to the final event on Thursday. Despite the loss, the Mustangs were awarded three of the four Most Outstanding Player honors.
The Mustangs (1-1) fell behind early on when the Horned Frogs (3-1) won the Fences event, 4-1. Sophomore
Olivia Woodson earned SMU's lone point, defeating her opponent with a score of 83.
SMU cut TCU's lead to two after picking up a 3-2 win in Reining. Competing in her second meet for the Mustangs, freshman
Dani Latimer earned her point and the Reining MOP honor with a score of 71.5. Junior
Savannah Ostner and senior
Holly Lansidel both defeated their opponents with marks of 71 and 72, respectively. The Frogs held a 6-4 lead at the half.
The Mustangs kept fighting in Horsemanship, taking three of the five points. Sophomore
Megan Waldron earned an SMU point with a 72.5 and freshman
Lily Anderson got the second with a 76. Sophomore
Aubrey Alderman earned her second MOP of the season and first in Horsemanship, scoring 76 and defeating her competitor by four.
TCU's lead was cut to one and the Frogs held a slim 8-7 lead heading into the final event, Flat.
Haley Zimmerman claimed the first point for the Mustangs to tie the score up at eight with a mark of 69 after her opponent scored a zero. After a TCU point,
Kirsten Ostling's performance tied the meet again at nine when her opponent scored 83, four below Ostling's 87, which earned her the MOP for the event.
SMU is back in action against Georgia on Saturday, Oct. 26 at the UGA Equestrian Complex starting at 10 a.m. in Bishop, Ga.
