DALLAS (SMU) -- No. 3 SMU dropped its first match of the season in a 4-3 overtime result versus Memphis on Friday night.Â
The Mustangs (10-1-1, 2-1-1) controlled the first half, out shooting the Tigers 11-2 in the first 45 minutes, but allowed a Memphis goal just before the halftime buzzer sounded. Trailing for the first time at the half, SMU pressed high in the second half and found an equalizing goal in the 54th minute when
Gabriel Costa rocketed a shot past the Memphis keeper to bring the game even.Â
SMU would then take the lead in the 67th minute when
Eddie Munjoma took a set piece and bent a shot around the wall, earning his seventh goal of the season and putting the Mustangs up 2-1.Â
But Memphis wouldn't go lightly as the Tigers (9-3-0, 3-1-0) sent its attackers forward, tying the game in the 81st minute and then taking a 3-2 lead in the 86th minute.Â
With its backs against the wall, SMU answered 17 seconds after Memphis took the lead when
Eddie Munjoma scored his eighth goal of the season, and second of the match, when he found the back of the net from a
Brandon Terwege assist.Â
With 90 minutes in the books, the two sides would head to a sudden death overtime period to settle the match. On its first attack of the overtime period the Tigers drew a corner kick, which they would send into the box and score off a header from Artur de Luca, giving Memphis a 4-3 win.Â
With the loss, SMU drops to 2-1-1 in conference play and now sits in a tie for second place with three AAC matches left.Â
SMU out shot Memphis 18-7 but were out shot on goal with the Tigers holding a 9-7 advantage. It's just the second time this season that SMU had fewer chances on net than its opponent.Â
The Mustangs are back in action next Tuesday night when they host Stetson in the team's final non-conference match of the regular season.Â
