BISHOP, Ga. (SMU) – No. 6 SMU dominated in Western events on Saturday, earning Most Outstanding Player honors in both Horsemanship and Reining, but it wasn't enough to hold off No. 2 Georgia as the Bulldogs won, 10-8 at the UGA Equestrian Complex.
The Mustangs (1-2, 0-0 ECAC) started strong, winning Horsemanship 4-1 over Georgia (2-1, 1-1 SEC).
Aubrey Alderman earned SMU's first point with a 73.5 followed by
Mallory Vroegh, who defeated her opponent 75-68.5 for a point difference of 6.5.
Lily Anderson and
Megan Waldron earned the final two points for SMU with scores of 74 and 76, respectively. Waldron was named the Most Outstanding Player for her performance, the second honor of her career.
Georgia took a 6-4 lead before heading into the half, earning all five points in Fences competition.
SMU claimed four points in the second half of the meet, earning three in Reining and one in Flat.
Kirsten Ostling gained the sole point for the Mustangs in Flat competition, outscoring her opponent 81-78.
The Western team earned three points in Reining after two were unclaimed because of ties.
Dani Latimer earned the highest score of the event and her second MOP this season with a career-high 73 over her opponent's 72. SMU's other two points came with
Aubrey Alderman scoring a 68.5 and
Savannah Ostner scoring a 71.5.
Next up, SMU will host Auburn on Friday, Nov. 8 at the Dallas Equestrian Center, with competition starting at 10 a.m. CT.
