Meryn Kennedy batted down the attack by Tulsa's Lilly Heyne for the win, 17-15.
Hannah Jacobs scored her team-high 19th kill to give SMU its second attempt to win the match, setting up Kennedy's heroics. Freshman
Alex Glover scored a season-high 16 kills and had five blocks. Kennedy finished with five blocks and seven kills.
The Mustangs needed the fifth set after Tulsa scored the last four points for a 25-23 win in the fourth set. SMU (8-5, 1-2 The American) scored six of the first seven points in the second set en route to a 25-13 victory to even the match at one set apiece. The Mustangs then held on in the third, a set that was tied four times and had just one lead change, winning 25-22.
SMU recorded 14 blocks in the match and had 88 digs to hold Tulsa (9-7, 2-1 The American) to a .134 attack percentage. SMU scored just three more kills than the Golden Hurricane, 61-58, improving to 4-1 in Moody Coliseum this season.
Lily Heim finished with 48 assists, 19 digs and a career-high six blocks, including two solo blocks. Montana Wats tallied a team-high 25 digs, and
Kendall Patterson had 12. Freshman
Jadyn Bauss scored a season-high seven kills.
The Mustangs host Wichita State Sunday at 1 p.m. The Shockers are 4-11 overall, 1-2 in The American, but have played five top-25 opponents.
