Box Score DALLAS (SMU) – SMU defeated Wichita State in straight sets Sunday in the first conference match of the season that didn't go five sets. The home win pushed the Mustangs to a 5-1 record in Moody Coliseum this season as sophomores
Rachel Woulfe and
Hannah Jacobs combined for 27 of SMU's 48 kills in the victory.
Woulfe hit .684 with 15 kills, while Jacobs added 12 kills to reach double figures for the 13th time in 14 matches this season. Freshman
Jadyn Bauss added eight kills, and freshman
Alex Glover added seven kills.
The Mustangs (9-5, 2-2 The American) ended the match with a 25-18 victory in the third, winning a seventh match in three sets this season. SMU scored the first four points of the final set, and never relinquished the lead. Wichita State (4-12, 1-3 The American) answered with three straight points of its own, but another 3-0 run gave SMU a 7-3 lead. Wichita State never got within two points the rest of the way in a set that didn't have any lead changes or ties.
SMU trailed by as many as four points in the second set as early as 9-5, but only as late as 11-7. The Mustangs rallied to tie the score at 13-13, and recaptured the lead at 16-15. The Shockers never led again as SMU finished with a 25-20 win. SMU had five blocks in the set, and hit .323 with 15 kills.
The Mustangs cruised to a 25-14 win in the first set. SMU took a 4-1 lead to start the set. Wichita State rallied to tie the score, 7-7. With a one-point lead, 11-10, SMU went on a 9-2 run, taking a 20-12 lead. The score was tied just once in a set the Mustangs never trailed in.
Lily Heim finished with 42 assists, guiding the Mustangs to a .375 attack percentage with 48 kills.
Montana Watts had a match-high 12 digs, and freshman
Makayla Miller recorded 11.
Meryn Kennedy posted eight of SMU's nine blocks.
The Mustangs conclude a three-match homestand against Memphis Friday at 7 p.m.
