DALLAS (FWAA/SMU) – Following a stunning 43-37 overtime win over Tulsa on Saturday, the Mustangs were named the Reveal Suits National Team of the Week.
SMU trailed 30-9 at the end of the third quarter before scoring on its last three possessions of regulation to tie the game, 30-30. The 21-point comeback was the second largest in program history and the three overtime periods tie for the most.
With the win, SMU is 6-0 for the first time since 1982 and improved to No. 21 in the AP Poll and entered the Coaches Poll at No. 22 this week. The Mustangs are now bowl eligible for the second time in three seasons and the first time under Head Coach
Sonny Dykes.
James Proche registered 11 catches for 153 yards and two touchdowns, while
Xavier Jones carried the ball 26 times for 121 yards and two scores to lead the Mustangs offensively. Quarterback
Shane Buechele threw for 280 yards and two TDs.
Proche was named the Walter Camp Award Offensive National Player of the Week and the American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
Defensively,
Ar'mani Johnson had his first two career interceptions, including one for a 64-yard touchdown return, while
Chevin Calloway also had a pick. Overall, the Mustangs had three interceptions, bringing their takeaway streak to 17 straight games, tied for the third longest active streak in the NCAA FBS.
This is the second time for SMU to win the FWAA's National Team of the Week honor. The first came this same week in the 2011 season after the Mustangs ended TCU's 22-game home win streak with an overtime win that gave them their best start to a season (4-1) in 25 years at that time.
SMU is back in action Oct. 19 against Temple at 2:30 p.m. on ESPN2 at Ford Stadium. Call 214-SMU-GAME or click
