DALLAS (SMU) -- No. 12 SMU used a 7th minute goal from
Henrik Bredeli and a
Grant Makela clean sheet to beat UConn 1-0 on Friday night and move to 13-1-1 on the season. With the victory the Mustangs now sit all alone in 2nd place in the conference standings with one match to go.
The Mustangs scored early, as they often have in 2019, when a
Knut Ahlander corner kick found its way onto fellow Norwegian
Henrik Bredeli's boot, who then scored the match's only goal.
"It was a good corner from Knut (Ahlander)," Bredeli said after the match. "Brandon (Terwege) tried to get his head on it, but it landed at my feet and I just poked it in."
It was Bredeli's second goal of the season, with his first coming in the 2OT thriller vs. UCF earlier in conference play - both goals came off corner kicks. The assist from Ahlander, notched the midfielders nation-high 11th of the season. Ahlander now has the most assists in a season of any Mustang since Chase Wileman's 13 in 2006.
The next 83 minutes would feature multiple chances for each side, as SMU (13-1-1, 4-1-1) had two goals called back in the second half - one due to a foul and another a result a offsides. The Huskies (4-11-1, 1-4-0) wouldn't go down without a fight, putting two shots on goal and another two chances hitting the post of the SMU goal.
Makela was unflappable in the second half as the Huskies pressed higher in search of an equalizer, fending off balls played into the box and collecting a pair of saves. It's Makela's fifth shutout of the season and 12th of his career.
With the win, the Mustangs recorded their 13th win of the season for the third time in
Kevin Hudson's time as a head coach. Before the match the SMU men's soccer program honored seven seniors. The 2019 senior class has been one of the best in school history, winning 46 games and back-to-back AAC championships.
Looking ahead, the Mustangs will travel to Philadelphia for one last regular season match with Temple on Tuesday night. With a win the guarantee a Top 2 seed, and first round bye, in the AAC postseason tournament. A win paired with a UCF loss would give the Mustangs a share of the regular season conference championship for the third straight year. The Mustangs match at Temple will kick off at 6 p.m. CT.
