STOCKTON, Calif. (SMU) – The SMU women's basketball team lost in the championship game of the Pacific Turkey Tip-Off against the host Pacific, 77-49, Saturday evening.
Johnasia Cash led the Mustangs with 12 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.
Amber Bacon scored nine points and
Paige Bayliss added eight, but it wasn't enough to counter the sharp-shooting of the Tigers. Pacific made 11 of 21 3-pointers, with Jessica Blakeslee going 5-for-5 outside the arc.
SMU shot just under 40 percent for the last three quarters, but a 2-for-12 start in the first quarter led to a 21-8 Pacific lead after the first 10 minutes. The Mustangs fought valiantly in an attempt to erase the deficit, but SMU wasn't able to string together enough consecutive defensive stops as the shots kept falling for the Tigers.
Each team had 35 rebounds, four blocks and 10 made free throws, but advantage went to Pacific on the offensive end. The Tigers made nine more field goals than the Mustangs, and
Ariana Whitfield made SMU's only 3-point attempt.
SMU returns home to take on Wright State Friday at 7 p.m. in Moody Coliseum.
