Mustangs Fall in 13-7 Heartbreaker at OSU

STILLWATER, Oklahoma (SMU) –The No. 2 SMU Mustangs fell to the No. 8 OSU Cowgirls in a 13-7 (1519.5-1296.5) upset, Saturday on the road. Kirsten Ostling clinched MOP honors in Equitation on the Flat, while Holly Lansidel won MOP for the second meet in a row for Reining (her third on the season).

    Competing in temperatures as low as 21 degrees, the Mustangs fell 3-10 in the all-time series record between the two schools. The Mustangs are the defending UEC Champions, while the Cowgirls are the current Big 12 Champs.

    The SMU Equestrian squad fought hard, but fell in close fashion, 2-3, on the flat, over fences and in reining, while going 1-4 in Horsemanship.

HUNTER SEAT
    In Equitation Over Fences, team captain Nora Gray defeated Cassidy Willbourn, 82-77, riding Quinn to improve her record over fences to 7-1 for her senior campaign, so far. Brett Burlington also emerged victorious, notching a 78-75 win over Sydnie Ziegler on Ginger.

    The margin of victory in Gray and Burlington's wins was seven and three points respectively, while OSU riders earned the 3-2 event finish by a narrow margin of two points for each of the other three competitors.The same reigned true in Horsemanship, where OSU won by a mere 0.5-2.0 points for each of their conquests.

    In Equitation on the Flat, Kirsten Ostling defeated Hannah Janson, 85-78, on Zodiac to earn the point, as well as Most Outstanding Performer recognition. Additionally, Vivian Yowan edged out her OSU opponent, Sydnie Ziegler, 87-83, on Sparky to enhance her unblemished 2018-19 record on the flat to 6-0-1.

WESTERN
    For Horsemanship, Michaela Dinger contributed to the Mustangs' scoring effort with a 73.0-72.5 victory over OSU's Maddie Bender on Allen. Payton Neiberger and Aubrey Alderman also captured wins in their exhibition rides.

    In Reining, the battle continued. Team captain Madison Steed won her point on Dillon, to defeat Hannah Lovrien, 71-70. Riding Ruf, Lansidel outscored Cowgirl competitor Hannah Mitchel, 72-70, to notch a point for the Mustangs, as well as tally a back-to-back MOP performance.

UP NEXT
    Up next, the Red & Blue return to Dallas to host UC Davis this Friday, Feb. 22 at 10 a.m. After hosting the Aggies from California, the No. 2 Mustangs will welcome No. 1 Auburn in another home contest, before traveling to metroplex rival TCU, then, preparing for the postseason.
