INDIANAPOLIS (SMU) – Junior Erin Trahan led the Mustangs on night two of the American Athletic Conference Championships with a victory in the 50-yard freestyle. The four-day event is being held at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis.
The Mustangs gained sole possession of second place in the team standings with 211 points. Houston leads the field at 303, while Cincinnati is third with 194.5. Connecticut (192.5), Tulane (170) and ECU (119) follow in order.
Trahan, who has already achieved the NCAA B Standard in both the 100- and 200-yard butterfly, added the 50 free to her list with a 22.53 to lead the field. The time ranks her seventh on SMU's all-time top performer list. Not only was her time a career best in the event, but sophomore Sam Smith followed suit with a career mark of 23.36 in prelims and went on to place eighth with a finals time of 23.56. Â
The Mustangs also placed a pair of swimmers in the Championship Final of the 200-yard individual medley, with Andrea Podmanikova leading the way and finishing fourth. The sophomore clocked a finals time of 1:59.79, keeping her under the NCAA B Standard. Classmate Gabi Grobler also competed in the A Final, posting a career performance of 2:00.82 for eighth.
Freshman Olivia Grossklaus opened the night with a personal best in the 500-yard freestyle, pacing the field in the Consolation Final in a time of 4:51.41. Senior El Yellin posted a career time of her own at 4:53.66 for 12th overall.
In relay action, SMU turned a five seed in the 200-yard freestyle relay heading into the event into a runner-up performance. Trahan, Felicity Passon, Smith and Podmanikova covered the distance in 1:31.56, less than a second off the leader's time.
