SMU Announces 2019 Hall Of Fame Class

Mar 11

DALLAS (SMU) - SMU and SMU Athletics, in conjunction with the SMU Lettermen's Association, have announced the newest class of the SMU Athletics Hall of Fame. The 2019 inductees include Bryan Robbins, John Simmons and Teri Steer. In addition, longtime photographer Brad Bradley will be given the Legends Award. The inductees will be recognized at the annual Hall of Fame Banquet and Induction Ceremony on Friday, May 3rd at Moody Coliseum.

Bryan Robbins was a five-time SWC champion diver and three-time All-American from 1964-68. The 1963 TAGS Diving Champion was inducted into the Texas Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame in 2012. Robbins was the diving coach at SMU from 1969-80, helping the Mustangs to 10 SWC team titles and nine NCAA top-10 finishes. He was the SWC Diving Coach of the Year in 1975 and 1979. He was the U.S. Diving Coach for the 1976 and 1980 Olympics as well as the 1979 World Championships.

John Simmons was a defensive back at SMU from 1977-80. The 1980 All-American and All-SWC honoree finished his career as SMU's all-time leader with 17 interceptions, returning three for touchdowns. His seven picks in 1980 ranks second in a season in program history. Simmons was selected by the Bengals with the 64th pick in the 1981 NFL Draft. He played for the Bengals, Packers and Colts from 1981-87.

Teri Steer was an eight-time All-American thrower, and two-time NCAA shot put champion from 1994-98. During her career at SMU, she set the collegiate shot put record. She still holds the SMU shot put record, has the third-best discus mark and the fifth-best javelin throw. She went on to win three USATF National Championships in the shot put from 1999-2002. After winning a bronze at the 1999 Pan-American Games and a bronze at the 1999 IAAF World Indoor Championships, she represented the United States at the 2000 Olympic Games.

Bradley has been a photographer for SMU Athletics since 1947, when he started taking SMU Football photos with his father-in-law, Jim Laughead. The World War II veteran has photographed every Cotton Bowl since 1948 and is the only photographer in the Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame. In the summer of 2018, the College Football Hall of Fame had an exhibit dedicated to him and his photography. Bradley is also a photographer for the SMU Tate Lecture Series and SMU Athletic Forum. During his career, Bradley has covered more than 40 colleges and several NFL teams.
