Mustang Open Season After Bear Twilight Invite Performance

WACO, Texas (SMU) – SMU Cross Country finished their opening race of the season with a fifth-place finish at the Bear Twilight Invite on Friday.

For the eighth straight season, SMU kicked off their campaign with the Bear Twilight Invitational, a 4K race hosted by Baylor at the Heart Of Texas Complex. The Mustangs brought in a very young roster into this season under first year head coach 'A Havahla Haynes. They raced the minimum on Friday including three freshmen.
Tess Misgen, in her first race back with the Mustangs program after spending the 2018 season with Drake University, led SMU with a 20th-place finish behind a time of 14:30.1. Right behind Misgen was freshman Maddie Hulcy. Hulcy, in her first collegiate race, hung near the front all race and placed in 20th with a time of 14:32.0.
Charlotte Tara Murphy, in her fourth year running with the Mustangs, finished in a time of 15:17.6 and in 35th place.
Two freshman rounded out the Mustang effort, Lior Kremer who finished her first race in 15:24.6 good for 39th and Even Hoeltgen who completed the race in 16:30.7 and in 50 th.

As a team, the Mustangs finished just one point shy of TCU with 104 and within striking distance of the top three (UTA 99). Texas ran away with the title recording 21 points followed by hosts Baylor who posted 58 points. Destiney Collins of Texas won the race with a time of 13.17.5, narrowly edging the course record set by Mustang Hannah Miller's 2018 time (13:18.7).
