SMU hosts Temple on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Mustangs are 9-1 at Moody Coliseum this season, including 2-0 in American Athletic Conference games.

SAM AWARD: At halftime, the SMU Lettermen's Board of Directors and its Silver Anniversary Mustang (SAM) Award Committee will honor Bob Begert as the recipient of the 2019 SAM Award. Begert played basketball at SMU from 1963-67 and helped the Mustangs to three straight Southwest Conference Championships. He earned a degree in business administration in 1967, and his juris doctor at SMU in 1971.
His civic and community involvement includes the Salesmanship Club of Dallas with two stints on the Board of Directors (1991, 2005); as a city councilman in University Park (2010-16) where he was Mayor Pro Tem in 2015; as a member of the Dallas Country Club with a term as president (2001); SMU Mustang Club and Lettermen's Association; and Chair of the University Park Centennial Master Plan Committee. He has also served as Board Chairman for the Park Cities YMCA, President of the Dallas Rotary Club, and as a Board of Trustees member for Highland Park United Methodist Church.
Begert has practiced law with Burford & Ryburn since 1971, where he has represented law firms, corporations, major hospitals, physician provider management companies, and the individuals that practice within those organizations for over 45 years. He has tried all types of litigation cases from casualty, death and product liability cases to high-level professional malpractice medical and legal cases. He is a member of the State Bar of Texas, Dallas Bar Association, Texas Association of Defense Counsel, a Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation and a Fellow of the Dallas Bar Foundation. His honors include being named Texas Super Lawyer (2004-2019) by Texas Monthly and Best Lawyers in Dallas – Professional Liability Litigation by D Magazine (2016). He was also listed in Best Lawyers' 2017 Dallas Legal Malpractice Law.
Begert served in the United States Army Reserve from 1968-1974. He has lived in University Park since 1977. He and his wife Debbie have three sons, Mark, John Michael and Jeff.
Each year, the SMU Lettermen's Association awards the SAM Award to a former letterwinner who has not been an undergraduate student at SMU for a minimum of 25 years. The recipient has brought honor to SMU, made contributions that have lasting and positive effects on his or her fellow citizens, and has been a model citizen in his or her community.

Kendric Davis is 56-63 at the FT line this season (89.9%, T-1st AAC). He made 40 of his first 41, hitting 20 before his first miss, then 20 more before his second miss. He was 11-14 in the game against UCF on Jan. 8, setting the SMU record for attempts in an AAC game and tying the record for makes in an AAC contest.

LAST GAME (L, 71-62 at Houston on Jan. 15): HOUSTON (AP) -- Fabian White Jr. recorded 17 points and 10 rebounds to carry Houston to a 71-62 win over SMU on Wednesday night. Caleb Mills had 15 points for Houston (13-4, 3-1 American Athletic Conference). Nate Hinton added 14 points and nine rebounds. DeJon Jarreau had eight rebounds. The Cougars have won seven of the last eight games and 11 of their last 13. SMU scored 20 points in the first half, a season low for the team.

THE SERIES VS. TEMPLE (6-6+): The Mustangs have won five of the past eight matchups, sweeping the Owls in 2014-15 and 2016-17. Temple's three most recent wins have come in seasons when the teams only met once; 2015-16, 2017-18 and 2018-19. During the 2014-15 season, SMU won three times over the Owls, including a 69-56 win on March 14 in a semifinal of at the American Athletic Conference Championship. Prior to the AAC, they last met when Temple defeated SMU 90-81 in the third-place game of the NCAA tournament on March 23, 1956. Pierre-Louis had 16 points and nine rebounds for Temple (18-7, 8-4 American Athletic Conference). Quinton Rose added 15 points. J.P. Moorman II had nine rebounds and seven assists for the hosts.
Jahmal McMurray had 22 points for the Mustangs (12-12, 4-8), who have now lost five games in a row.

HEAD COACH TIM JANKOVICH... is in his fourth  season at the helm at SMU after four seasons as the associate head coach. He is in his 37th season as a collegiate coach, and his 15th as a head coach. As a head 6oach, he is 240-163 (.596) [83-42 at SMU (.664), including 57-14 (.803) at Moody Coliseum (started 36-0, second best in NCAA history)]. That includes a 104-64 mark at ISU where his teams recorded four top-three finishes in the Missouri Valley, reached the conference tournament final three times and earned four NIT bids. As an assistant or head coach, his teams are 628-375 (.626) with six regular season conference championships, four league tournament titles, nine NCAA Tournament appearances and eight NIT bids. This is his 12th season as the leader of a Division I program, including five as head coach at Illinois State (2007-12) and four at North Texas (1993-97). CALL IT A COMEBACK: SMU rallied from 15 points down (72-57 at 6:28) to win 92-81 in overtime at Vanderbilt on January 4. That ties for the seventh largest comeback in program history and the ties for the largest under Head Coach
Tim Jankovich (80-75 win vs Tulane 2/15/17). SMU closed regulation at Vanderbilt on a 20-5 run to tie the game at 77-all. The Mustangs then had a 15-4 advantage in overtime. SMU still trailed by 10 with less than five minutes left, getting the deficit to 8 points on two
Emmanuel Bandoumel free throws with 4:04 remianing. That makes it one of 30 NCAA D-I comebacks from 10 or more in the final 5 minutes. The Mustangs still trailed by 6 in the final minute when
Tyson Jolly hit a 3 with 28 seconds left to cut it to 77-74.
Kendric Davis stole the inbounds pass and tried to score on a layup. Davis missed and then got the offensive rebounds, passing to
Isiaha Mike outside the top of the key where Mike hit the tying three with 19 seconds remaining to get the game into overtime.Â
TROPHY CASE: Since the start of the 2013-14 season, the Mustangs have added seven items to the trophy case. SMU won the 2014-15 and 2016-17 American Athletic Conference regular season and tournament titles. SMU has also won 2019-20 Southwestern Showdown and the 2015-16 Las Vegas Classic. In 2013-14, SMU was the runner-up in the NIT.
