SMU opens American Athletic Conference play at home on Wednesday against ECU at 7 p.m. The Mustangs enter league play 4-0 on the season after a 66-64 buzzer-beating win at Dayton on Saturday, Dec. 5.
Emmanuel Bandoumel went the length of the floor and hit a running jumper with 0.2 seconds left to lift SMU to the road victory.
SMU has won six straight American Athletic Conference openers and is 7-0 in AAC home openers. This is the fifth time the Mustangs have opened at home in The American (4-0).
SMU is receiving votes in the Associated Press Top 25 and the USA Today Coaches Poll for the second straight week. The Mustangs have now been ranked or receiving votes in seven of the past eight seasons.
On Dec. 7,
Kendric Davis was named The American Player of the Week and selected as the National Player of the Week by ESPN's Jeff Brozello. Davis averaged 17.3 points, 9.0 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 3.3 steals in three wins from Nov. 30-Dec. 5.
SMU is 94-49 under
Tim Jankovich and 66-15 at Moody Coliseum. The Mustangs are 18-2 in the past 20 games at Moody Coliseum (3-0 this season).
AAC LEADERS: SMU leads the AAC in scoring (89.0, 25th NCAA), scoring margin (+24.0, 25th NCAA), FG% (48.0, 64th NCAA), 3FG% (38.5, 52nd NCAA), rebound margin (+11.3, 24th NCAA), assists (19.3, 21st NCAA) and 3FGs (8.8). Kendric Davis (first team) and
Tyson Jolly (second team) were selected to preseason All-AAC teams. The Mustangs were picked to finish third in the conference race behind Houston and Memphis. Davis was an All-AAC Third-Team honoree last season after leading the league with 6.7 assists (10th NCAA) and a 2.7 assist-to-turnover ratio (19th NCAA). He was second for SMU in scoring at 14.2 points (8th AAC) while also averaging 4.1 rebounds. He shot 44.9% overall (12th AAC) and 85.4% on free throws (2nd AAC). Jolly was also All-AAC Third-Team last season after leading SMU in scoring at 14.5 points (7th AAC). He was third for SMU at 6.2 rebounds (13th AAC) and second with 2.3 assists per game. 2019-20 SMU IN THE AAC: The Mustangs finished the shortened 2019-20 season with a 19-11 overall record. SMU went 15-2 at Moody Coliseum, winning eight of nine home games in league play. Last season, SMU led the American Athletic Conference in scoring (72.9), field goal percentage (45.1%), free-throw percentage (76.2%, 25th NCAA), assists (15.6, 19th NCAA) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.2). The Mustangs had four of the top 25 scorers in the AAC;

LAST GAME (W, 66-64 AT DAYTON on Dec. 5): DAYTON, Ohio (AP) —
Emmanuel Bandoumel hit a short jump shot with less than a second left to lift SMU to a 66-64 win over Dayton on Saturday. Ibi Watson drilled a 3-pointer with nine seconds left to tie the game but Bandoumel took the ball toward the low block on the left side of the lane, twisted and floated a one-hander that landed softly on the back of the rim and dropped through.
Kendric Davis scored 21 points to lead the Mustangs (4-0) and Bandoumel added 19. Ibi Watson had 23 points and six rebounds for the Flyers (1-1). Chase Johnson added 14 points. Jalen Crutcher had 10 points and seven assists.
SERIES VS ECU: SMU holds a 16-5 series lead over East Carolina. SMU has won 11 of the past 12 meetings. The past 12 meetings have been since the teams met in The American with two matchups in the AAC Tournament, in 2015 and 2017 when the Mustangs went on to win the championship. The foes were 4-4 while both were in Conference USA. The first meeting between the two teams was on Dec. 21, 1985 at the Kentucky Invitational (W, 71-62).Â
LAST SEASON VS ECU: (W, 84-64 at SMU on Jan. 22) DALLAS (AP) -
Tyson Jolly scored 17 points and the first of his five 3-pointers kicked off a 10-0 run for the Mustangs as SMU walloped Eastern Carolina 84-64.
Kendric Davis added 15 points with nine assists and
Ethan Chargois posted 12 points as SMU (14-4, 4-2 American Athletic Conference), earned its fifth straight home victory.
Isiaha Mike added eight points, five rebounds and six assists. SMU posted a season-high 15 3-pointers - second most in school history. The Mustangs are 11-1 at Moody Coliseum this season. Jayden Gardner and Brandon Suggs each scored 18 points for East Carolina (8-111, 2-4), which lost a third straight. Tristen Newton added 15 points with six assists. Gardner led with nine rebounds. The Mustangs were 55% shooting for the game (29-for-53), owned the boards 37-26 and avenged a Jan. 11 loss to East Carolina, 71-68. (L, 71-68 at ECU on Jan. 11) GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Tristen Newton hit a 3-pointer from the left corner in the closing seconds and East Carolina upset SMU 71-68.
Tyson Jolly made two free throws to tie the game with 12 seconds left. Following a timeout, Tremont Robinson-White dribbled the length of the court and as he was challenged at the basket he found Newton for the game winner. Jolly's runner from just inside half court bounced off the front of the rim as time expired. Jayden Gardner scored 20 points for the Pirates. Newton added 12, Tyrie Jackson 11 and Tremont Robinson-White 10 points. The Pirates were in trouble after the first half, heading into halftime trailing 38-27. Gardner had 14 points in the second half and East Carolina made 7 of 17 3-pointers and shot 50%. Robinson-White scored with 1:50 to play to make it a 3-point game. He then came up with a steal and was fouled. He made the first free throw and missed the second but Gardner grabbed the rebound and made the putback to tie the game at the 1:19 mark. SMU missed a shot and made two free throws with 28.8 seconds to go for a 68-66 lead.
Isiaha Mike had 21 points for the Mustangs.

BUZZER-BEATING BANDOUMEL:
Emmanuel Bandoumel hit a driving jumper with 0.2 on the clock for the 66-64 win at [-/rv] Dayton on Dec. 5. It was his second game winner. He hit a three with 30 seconds left in overtime for a 73-72 victory over [20/19] Houston on Feb. 15, 2020.

Feron Hunt is averaging 7.0 rebounds (5th AAC) and has at least 7 rebounds in each 3 of 4 games this season. He has 7 or more rebounds in 36 of 66 career games. He has led the team 22 times in his career (twice this season after 10 each previous year). In 2019-20,

That was the seventh time in program history that SMU has successfully defended home court at least 15 times. Five of those are in the past seven seasons. Since Moody Coliseum re-opened for the 2014 American Athletic Conference schedule, SMU has successfully defended home court 103 times in 122 contests.
90+ IN FIRST THREE: SMU scored at least 91 points in each of the first three games this season; winning 97-67 vs Sam Houston State on 11/25, 91-54 vs A&M-Corpus Christi on 11/30 and 102-75 vs Houston Baptist on 12/2. This is the first time SMU has eclipsed 90 points in its first three games since 1992-93.
OPENING THE RIGHT WAY: SMU opened the season with a 97-67 win over Sam Houston State at Moody Coliseum.
Kendric Davis had a career-high 33 points to set the SMU record in an opener that was previously 30 points by Ira Terrell at Saint Louis on 11-29-1975. It was also the most points in an opener for SMU since a 110-69 win against Hardin-Simmons to open 1999-2000 and the largest victory since an 85-50 win against Sam Houston State to start the 2015-16 campaign.

HEAD COACH TIM JANKOVICH... is in his fifth season at the helm at SMU after four seasons as the associate head coach. He is in his 38th season as a collegiate coach, and his 16th as a head coach. As a head coach, he is 251-170 (.596) [94-49 at SMU (.657), including 66-15 (.815) at Moody Coliseum (started 36-0, second best in NCAA history)]. That includes a 104-64 mark at ISU where his teams recorded four top-three finishes in the Missouri Valley, reached the conference tournament final three times and earned four NIT bids. As an assistant or head coach, his teams are 628-375 (.626) with six regular season conference championships, four league tournament titles, nine NCAA Tournament appearances and eight NIT bids. This is his 12th season as the leader of a Division I program, including five as head coach at Illinois State (2007-12) and four at North Texas (1993-97). The 2017-18 Mustangs started 13-6 with three wins over ranked opponents, topping No. 2 Arizona in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament, No. 14 USC at Moody Coliseum and No. 7 Wichita State on the road. NON-CONFERENCE REGULAR SEASON UNDER JANKOVICH: SMU is 51-12 in regular-season non-conference games under
Tim Jankovich. The Mustangs are 41-4 at Moody Coliseum in those games, 3-4 in neutral-site games and 7-4 in true road games.Â
TROPHY CASE: Since the start of the 2013-14 season, the Mustangs have added seven items to the trophy case. SMU won the 2014-15 and 2016-17 American Athletic Conference regular season and tournament titles. SMU has also won 2019-20 Southwestern Showdown and the 2015-16 Las Vegas Classic. In 2013-14, SMU was the runner-up in the NIT.
