SMU Comes Up Short At UCF Saturday

ORLANDO, Fla. (SMU) – UCF pulled away in the fourth quarter to defeat SMU, 67-57, in Addition Arena Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Knights improved to 10-1 on their home floor, 12-9 overall and 3-4 in the American Athletic Conference, while SMU dropped to 9-11, 3-5 in The American).

Reagan Bradley scored 17 points to lead a trio of Mustangs in double figures, but was held to just one point in the second half. Ariana Whitfield, Johnasia Cash and Amber Bacon combined for 21 of SMU's 25 second-half points. Bacon finished the game with 10 points, while Whitfield tallied 12, eight in the last 20 minutes.

Bradley matched Paige Bayliss with a team-high five rebounds and added two assists to her record-chasing total, needing eight to tie the freshman record of 95. Whitfield added five assists.

For three quarters, it appeared as if SMU would join then-No. 4 Connecticut as the only teams to win at UCF. The Knights took an eight-point lead midway through the third quarter, 42-34 with 6:06 left, and the advantage was still eight, 46-38, with 2:23 remaining. After a turnaround jumper by Florence Tshimanga, Whitfield drained a 3-pointer and then took advantage of a JaQuia White steal for two points, pulling SMU to within one, 42-41.

Brittney Smith got away from the SMU defense just before the third-quarter buzzer for layup on the inbounds play. Smith started the scoring in the fourth quarter before Kayla White made the next two baskets. After knocking down a 3, the sophomore swiped one of her three steals and finished the fastbreak layup to tie the score, 50-50.

Four different Knights scored during an 11-0 run that left SMU trailing 61-50 with 3:34 to play in the game. It was the final blow in the physical affair, which seemed to have more contact than a Mayweather fight. The 19-12 fourth quarter score was the only quarter with more than a possession advantage by either team.

SMU plays at Houston Wednesday night at 7 p.m. before returning home Feb. 8 to take on Cincinnati in Moody Coliseum.
