DALLAS (SMU) – No. 7 SMU defeated No. 8 Texas A&M with a final score of 12-7 to win its second-straight meet of the spring season and advance to 4-3 overall.
"It's really neat to see the hunt seat team come out on fire this spring, and hats off to Coach Henter for having them well prepared," head coach
Carol Gwin said. "In addition, the consistency of the western team this year has been unparelled since I've been at SMU and Coach Lantz always has those girls ready to compete."
The Mustangs earned their first event win of the day in Horsemanship, finishing 3-2. All three SMU riders that earned points scored a 75.5.
Lily Anderson,
Aubrey Alderman and
Payton Neiberger all helped the Mustangs win the event over the Aggies.
SMU also won 3-2 in Flat competition to carry a 6-4 lead into the halfway point.
Madison Johnson earned the first point of the event, scoring a 71 to top her opponent by seven. Next up,
Olivia Woodson scored an event-high 86 in her Flat debut and earned the Most Outstanding Player honor for her performance. SMU's third point came from
Mary Elizabeth Cordia's 82-70 win.
The Fences squad secured its second win of the season, topping the Aggies 4-1.
Devin Seek started the scoring with an 82.
Olivia Woodson scored her second point of the day with an 83 over her opponent's 79. Next on the board for the Mustangs was
Vivian Yowan, defeating her opponent, 85-80. Lastly for SMU,
Tali DeJong scored an 83 to earn the MOP for the event.
SMU tied with Texas A&M in Reining with a 2-2 final after
Taylor Zimmerman tied with her opponent at 71.5.
Jill Pfisthner and
Aubrey Alderman earned the final two points to secure the win for the Mustangs with scores of 70.5 and 71, respectively.
Next, the Mustangs head to Tennessee to take on UT Martin and SUNY New Paltz at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Pavilion. SMU faces UT Martin on Thursday, Feb. 20 and SUNY New Paltz on Friday, Feb. 21.
