LA QUINTA, California – The No. 13 SMU men's golf team picks up its season with The Prestige presented by Charles Schwab, hosted by UC Davis at PGA West's Greg Norman Course. The Mustangs enter as one of six top-25 teams in the field.
The three-day, 54-hole event opens the spring season for the Mustangs, who won two of their four events in the fall.
SMU is joined by No. 1 Pepperdine, No. 9 Texas Tech, No. 16 Texas, No. 22 UCLA and No. 25 LSU as the ranked competitors in the field. Arkansas, Iowa State, Northwestern, Oklahoma State, Oregon State, San Diego State, Stanford, Stirling (Scotland), UC Davis and Wyoming complete the 16-team field. The field features four of the eight teams to reach the 2019 NCAA match-play quarterfinals (Oklahoma State, SMU, Stanford and Texas).
Senior
Daniel Connolly leads the Mustangs onto the par 72 / 7,144-yard Greg Norman Course, which sits 40 feet below sea level. Connolly, a two-time top-25 finisher at the American Athletic Conference Championship, is making his second appearance of the season.
SMU boasts three of the top 20 individuals in the Golfstat rankings, all of whom are competing at PGA West.
Noah Goodwin enters the tournament ranked fourth in the nation, finishing seventh-or-better in all three tournaments he has played in this season, including a win at the Maridoe Intercollegiate.
Justin Thompson enters the tournament as the No. 16 golfer in the nation, averaging 70.00 strokes per round. Mac Messiner, who has shot par-or-better in 10 of his 12 rounds, and turned in a round in the 60s six times, ranks 20
th entering the event.
Ollie Osborne completes the Mustang lineup, carrying a 71.92 stroke average after a fall season that saw him pick up his second collegiate victory with an 8-under showing at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate.
Piran Adi and
Jackson Markham compete concurrently at The Prestige Individual Tournament, hosted at nearby Coral Mountain Golf Club, a par 72 / 7,144-yard track. Markham boasts 20 rounds of par-or-better in his SMU career, while Adi shot under-par in his only event of the season so far, the Trinity Forest Invitational.
