LA QUINTA, California – The No. 13 SMU men's golf team went under par for the second consecutive day at The Prestige, and the Mustangs'
Jackson Markham set a 54-hole school record by shooting 16-under at the concurrent Prestige Individual Tournament to complete a successful week in the Coachella Valley.
In The Prestige presented by Charles Schwab, the Mustangs again shined on the back-nine of the Greg Norman Course at PGA West, going 10-under coming in. In the 54-hole tournament, SMU played the last nine at a collective 19-under par.
"I'm proud of the way the guys kept grinding after a difficult front-nine," said interim head coach
Chris Parra. "I think the guys showed what they were capable on the back-nine, shooting 10-under."
"We are looking forward to the Southern Highlands Collegiate," Parra added. "The rust should be gone and we'll be ready for a great run this spring."
SMU used the strong back nine to finish 4-under for the day, and 5-under for the tournament, finishing sixth in a field that included six top-25 teams. No. 16 Texas won the tournament at 20-under par, followed by No. 1 Pepperdine at 14-under. San Diego State's Leo Oyo won medalist honors at 11-under par.
Three Mustangs turned in final-round scorecards in the 60s at the par 71 / 7,100-yard track, led by 68s from both
Ollie Osborne and
Noah Goodwin.
Osborne secured his second top-five finish of the season, coming in a tie for fourth at 6-under par, playing in a field that had 21 of the nation's top-100 players. The sophomore led the tournament by averaging 2.75 strokes on the Norman Course's four par 3s, and led the team with 14 birdies.
Goodwin went bogey-free Wednesday, notching a top-10 finish for the fourth time in four tries this season. Goodwin, who was named to the Ben Hogan Award Watch List earlier in the day, was in the tie for 10
th at 4-under.
Mac Meissner signed for a 2-under 69, his best round of the tournament and his 11
th par-or-better round in 15 attempts this season. Meissner played the three par 5s at the Norman Course at 5-under during the 54-hole event.
Daniel Connolly and
Justin Thompson each shot a 4-over 75 to close the event. Connolly tied for 63
rd at 8-over, and Thompson tied for 67
th at 11-over par.
In the concurrent Prestige Individual Tournament, Markham broke the SMU 54-hole scoring record, putting the finishing touches on a 16-under 200 to win the event by two strokes. Markham, who shot even par at the par 72 / 7,145-yard Coral Mountain Golf Club Wednesday, erased the record previously held by tour pros Kelly Kraft and Franklin Hatchett by one stroke.
Markham went under par in 22 of his 54 holes during the tournament to pick up his first collegiate win. He becomes the fourth Mustang to win medalist honors during the 2019-20 season.
Piran Adi finished in a career-best tie for 10
th at 4-under. Adi had a final-round 74.
The Mustangs return to action March 1-3 in Las Vegas, Nevada, playing at the Southern Highlands Collegiate, hosted by UNLV.
