No. 6 SMU Tops No. 10 UT Martin In 11-7 Final

MARTIN, Tenn.
– No. 6 SMU defeated No. 10 UT Martin on the road at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Pavilion in an 11-7 final to earn its first conference win and remain perfect for the spring season.

"We had a solid effort today but have a few things to clean up for tomorrow," head coach Carol Gwin said. "I am happy to get a win and continue improving as the NCEA Championship gets closer."

The Mustangs (5-3, 1-0 ECAC) started hot with a 4-1 win in Fences over the Skyhawks (2-6, 2-2 ECAC). The win was the third straight for the fences squad. UT Martin earned the first point before Olivia Woodson secured a point for the Mustangs with a 76 followed by Miranda Seade, who scored a 74 in her Fences debut. Tali DeJong and Devin Seek also earned points for SMU with scores of 78 and 80, respectively.

After the Skyhawks took a point in Horsemanship, SMU earned three and a tie to secure the event win, 3-1. Payton Neiberger scored a 73 to defeat her opponent by 11.5 and earn the first point for the Mustangs. Megan Waldron earned a 72 for SMU's second point and Mallory Vroegh scored a season-high 76.5 to secure the event win and the Most Outstanding Player honor, her second of the season.

SMU led UT Martin 9-4 at the halfway point of the meet.

Flat ended with a 2-2-1 final between the Mustangs and the Skyhawks. Vivian Yowan scored a 75 to top her opponent's 73. Yowan earned her third MOP this season in the win. Haley Zimmerman earned a 70 for SMU's second point.

The Mustangs closed out the meet with two points in Reining competition. Holly Lansidel and Jill Pfisthner both scored 69 to earn points for SMU and clinch the 11-7 win over UT Martin. Lansidel earned her first MOP of the season for her performance.

SMU takes on SUNY New Paltz in Martin, Tenn. on Friday at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Pavilion. The two will compete in Flat and Fences competition only and action will begin at 10 a.m.
