Enloe Steps Down As SMU Men’s Golf Head Coach; Parra Named Interim Head Coach

Feb 6

DALLAS – Jason Enloe announced that he has stepped down as head men's golf coach at SMU. Chris Parra, who has served as an assistant coach since Enloe's appointment in 2014, will take over as Interim Head Coach.

"This was an exceedingly hard decision for me to make," said Enloe, who lost his wife and the mother of his two daughters, Katie, to leukemia in July 2018, "but it's the decision that is best for me, for my family and for the SMU golf program. It's time for me to start a new chapter in my life and it's time to move on from being a college golf coach.

"I want to thank my current and former players, their parents, my friends, my family, the SMU administration and the countless others who have shown me such great support over the last few years. Coaching at my alma mater has been a dream come true and I will always treasure the memories. I'd like to believe that I've left the program in a position to succeed, and I look forward to cheering the team on as an alum, knowing that they will remain among the elite college golf programs."

The staff's tenure has been highlighted by success at the NCAA Championships, producing the program's first NCAA Individual Champion in 2015, when Bryson DeChambeau claimed medalist honors at the NCAA Championships, and reaching the match-play quarterfinals in 2019 after winning a playoff with Clemson for a spot in the final eight. The Mustangs also captured the program's first NCAA Regional Championship in 2015, winning the Noblesville (Ind.) Regional.

In five-plus seasons with the men's golf program, the duo coached eight All-American Athletic Conference selections, two AAC Golfers of the Year (DeChambeau, 2015; Mac Meissner 2019) and four All-Americans, plus led the team to eight tournament wins. For his efforts, Enloe was named Regional Coach of the Year in 2019.

"I want to thank Jason for his time here at SMU and I know this was a hard choice for him to make," said SMU Director of Athletics Rick Hart. "He guided our program through some difficult times and has left us with an elite college golf program. We wish him the best in all his future endeavors and look forward to having him remain around the program as an alumnus and a friend of SMU Golf."

Prior to being named head coach in August 2014, Enloe was an assistant with the program from 2011-14, helping the Mustangs to their first American Athletic Conference title in 2014 and a trip to the NCAA Quarterfinals that same year. A former All-Southwest Conference golfer for the Mustangs, Enloe returned to the Hilltop after a 14-year professional golf career, playing on what is now known as the Korn Ferry Tour, winning the Pete Dye Classic in 2006 and the Fort Smith Classic in 2009.

Parra, an SMU golf letterwinner, played professionally for 14 seasons on various tours, including an appearance at the 2006 PGA Tour Bryon Nelson Classic. He notched an individual victory during his collegiate career, winning the UTSA Invitational in 1996-97.

"I'm confident that Coach Parra can take over this program that he has helped shape over the past several seasons," said Hart. "He led us through a successful fall while Jason was on leave and I'm excited to see how far he can take the team this spring."

Parra's first event as Interim Head Coach is The Prestige, hosted by UC Davis, on the Greg Norman Course at PGA West in La Quinta, California, February 17-19.
